We had the good fortune of connecting with Flo Sherry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Flo, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I have always welcomed risk in my life – in terms of trying new things. I’m not a dare devil and you won’t see me bungee jumping off a skyscraper anytime soon but risk makes you feel alive. It’s exciting and scary not knowing what the outcome will be. It’s fun dreaming about possibilities and all the wonderful things that might happen. But even worse is looking back later in life with regret. wishing you took that chance. I met my husband when he was on a business trip in Toronto, and I had just graduated from college. We met one night, went on a date the next, then he was on the road again. He lived in San Diego, and I lived in Canada. Different countries and opposite coasts. He didn’t see a future, but I was persistant. We reconnected again after a year, and dated long distance knowing full well that long distance couldn’t continue forever. Maybe it was the lure of California, but I gave up my job and my friends and moved to California. This month we celebrate being married for 20 years. That decision changed my life and everyday I’m thankful that I went with my gut and pursued something I felt was worthwhile. With risk sometimes comes change, and change is hard. Change means starting over and the older we get – the harder it is do. I recently became a Realtor after being an art teacher for 7 years and I am leaving at the height of my career to pursue a dream I’ve always had. Starting from scratch is humbling. It requires learning all over again, making mistakes and not saying the perfect thing when asked questions. It means being uncomfortable a lot! It makes us squirm and want to retreat back to our comfort zone when people hold you in high regard and respect you for your skills and knowledge. But I regain my composure and remember I am not the only one starting something new, that many have done this before and this feeling shall pass. Learn quickly and as much as you can, and that comes with rejection, failure and heart break. But is it worth it? Heck ya! I want to look back on my life when I’m old and gray and say I did it, and did it well! I lived a good life, no regrets!
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am a Realtor, and there are thousands and thousands of Realtors. They say the average person knows about 12! So setting yourself apart is important, but also being true to who you are. Finding your Real Estate personality and your voice is the magic and it’s re-discovering yourself all over again. It’s exciting, it’s fun, but it’s also important to address your areas of opportunity and growth. I need to evolve in order to grow. And change is hard! I have never been a morning person, and if it was up to me, my day could start at 11am and that would work just fine! I am also not structured and do things when I find time. Building a business requires discipline and structure if you want to be successful. It means being productive and having a game plan to the day and the week to achieve your goals. Success is never an accident. But they say, it’s never too late to teach a new dog new tricks. Change is hard, but so what….we are all capable of doing hard things. And life is all about evolving and growing into your best self. I am with a great company that provides a lot of coaching in building their agents to help with this exact thing – to help us be our best self and live our best life. For me, being an agent allows me to be an impact on families and my community. That is big responsibility, but I’m excited to take on the challenge! I found 8z Real Estate through my friend who was currently an agent, and I am so grateful to have found this brokerage. They are want to me succeed and they care. Many top agents work for 8z and I look forward to being one of them!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There is so much to do in Colorado! I am a city girl but I do love all the mountain towns we have at our fingertips to explore. Living in Broomfield, Pearl street in Boulder is a definite must. One of my favorite places is Motomaki – where they have the vest deconstructed sushi bowls EVER! I also love the Kitchen, SALT, Bar Taco to name a few. The RiNo district is also fun – I don’t have any favorite places but I did love the tapas bar Barcelona was fabulous! Farmers markets are always fun to check out as well and Colorado has some of the best art festivals ever and there is usually something going on somewhere!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have never thought about this before, but the credit would have to go my Mom. Not in the traditional sense, but she was someone who played it safe her whole life. She married someone who had a good degree, went with a career that made sense and never followed her passion. She was always practical and I see where she is in her 70’s and even though she’ll never admit it, I think she wishes she would have made different choices in her life, if given the chance.
