We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Velarde and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie, how do you think about risk?
The other side of risk is reward, like a balancing act we get to choose how far we tip one way or the other. This can be a daunting process but a critical one. If you don’t ever take risks, the truth is you may be risking everything you ever wanted to be. I understood this many years ago but I still hesitated to take risks. Risks to be myself, risks to do what I love, risks to be vulnerable with my true feelings, risks to get out of the rat race and expectations of society. I was born with a natural ability to relate to people, help people and school was an absolute breeze for me. These things took very little effort for me to succeed in. The trap I fell into at a very young age was to become that people pleaser and “succeed” and follow the expected path of me. This is just what I did, I was on every award roster, from grades to social, I was student body president in high school, I went straight to college and got my Bachelors and Masters degrees in business in a total of four years for both with a 3.96 GPA and Hasan School of Business Graduate Student of the Year at age 22. I am proud of these things and of course cherish most the time I had with the people I met. I moved on to jobs that a 22-26 year old usually doesn’t have, marking manager of a multi million dollar asset allocation company, College Registrar, Director of Healthcare of a Behavioral and Mental Health Clinic. As time progressed, I did what was expected and “normal” I got promotions, bigger titles, more money, more influence, more power….. but it was what I lost in this process that brought me to one of the biggest risks I’ve taken in life. I lost so much time with my family, I lost my health both physically and emotionally, I lost sight of what truly makes life worth living. I learned it isn’t 70 hour weeks and large salaries that make life grand. I stepped away from corporate America in July of 2018, it was a risk I had to take. It felt like jumping off of a building, but if I didn’t take that plunge, I would have died on that rooftop. In July of 2018, I was not recovering from a medically necessary surgery (likely stress-induced and lack of self-awareness and self-care), I could barely make it through a day. Luckily in February of 2014 I had started a company called Glitter Zen, the combination of my favorite color and my favorite feeling. With Glitter Zen I design and hand make gemstone diffuser bracelets for healing. My husband is an integral pillar of my support in this journey and I could not have made this switch without him. Our two children even play a role in the family business and that warms my heart. I knew Glitter Zen was not going to be enough to sustain us completely at that time but I had stumbled across a product called Ningxia Red from Young Living three months prior. This single antioxidant drink changed my life! I had energy again, I could go on a walk, I could play with the kids, I wasn’t sleeping 14-16 hours a day. I tried more essential oils from Young Living (after using every other brand since age 18) and I was astonished. Due to these physical, mental and emotional changed from moving to low tox living I began to share Young Living with the world in September of 2018. Talk about a risk, the biggest risk I felt was the judgement and thoughts of others who believed I was to be a corporate woman my whole life and what they would think, what would my family think, what would my friends think? I’m selling gemstone jewelry and helping people find wellness through Young Living. This was a shock to many, including me. This was by far, the best rick in my life I’ve ever taken. I am helping hundreds of people find wellness through gemstones, therapeutic grade essential oils and low tox product switches in the home. My heart is full. It is full of family, love, gratitude, joy, well-being and a true sense of my purpose on this earth. I am ever grateful for the risk I took. As of now, I look at risk as an opportunity and not something to avoid. I am finding my true joy and inner self everyday since the biggest risk of my life and my family’s. I will be ever grateful for the support of my husband to encourage me to jump and do what I was meant to do! I have thousands more people to help before my time is done here.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve had a passion for wellness and healing through gemstones and essential oils since I can remember, colleting “pretty rocks” on a hike or picking up every oil or incense in a store I could get my nose on! Nature resounds with everyone and it has spoken to me since I was young. Everything has a vibration and the vibration of genuine gemstones and true therapeutic grade essential oils distilled correctly have vibrations to work with our bodies to heal. The fact that science and nature are here for us just amazes me and to be able to be creative and make jewelry and blends to bring joy, cheer, wellness, sleep, peace, and more to others is AMAZING. I want the world to know that wellness is not something to seek when you are ill. Wellness is a true proactive part of this beautiful life that we can easily incorporate to live life as the highest version of ourselves and to be and do what we were meant to! Glitter Zen and Young Living represent my heart and my soul and I will be sharing these methods and ways until I leave this earth.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As a born and raised Colorado Native, there are so many options!!! I live in Southern Colorado, Pueblo, and this town is a gem! The family owned-restaurants are abundant and can’t be compared! Pueblo has some of the most wonderful Mexican and Italian restaurants in Colorado if not the US! So in this week, I would take my guest to local eateries to experience the area! Some of my family favorites are El Nopal, Nachos, Do Drop Inn, Angelo’s, Bingo Burger, Grind Haus Cafe, Giodone’s, Schuster’s Bakery and so many more! Drinks on the patio of Brues Alehouse and 1129 would also be on the agenda! We would head for the hills! I love San Isabel Lake, Salida, Bishop’s Castle, Red Rocks, Manitou Springs, Breckenridge (wait, is the week over yet?). The nature in Colorado is unbeatable and I would take most of the time to spend in nature and take in the beauty and culture of Colorado.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This shoutout goes out to every person and situation I’ve encountered through life. If I hadn’t had these experiences, I wouldn’t be sitting here typing this today – you all know who you are! I have so many special people that have made my life so rich and rewarding and I pray they all know who they are but here are some of my biggest supporters and encouragers. My husband, John Velarde, who has been by my side since the age of 14, is my rock and biggest supporter. He has always encouraged me to be me and to be all I can be. His love and dedication to me and our children is unwavering and can’t be explained in words. Our story is one for the books and I express all of my love and gratitude to John. He’s been by my side through every up and every down. We are a team and we are soulmates beyond measure. Thank you to the love my every lifetime. My parents, Wayne and Lorrie, and my second set of parents, Leroy and Conni, are some of my biggest cheerleaders and fans. Although they might wonder what I’m doing sometimes they know I will prevail! LOL. They are always on my side through thick and thin and I know they are there to lean on when I need it. I was born an entrepreneur and their encouragement has helped get me there today. I have 6 siblings and 2 sister in-laws who also have by back and I appreciate every single one of them for helping form the person I am today. I have some of the very best friends in the whole entire world! Your vibe truly attracts your tribe. I am inspired by all of my Young Living members, my teammates and soul sisters who share wellness alongside me, my wellness mentor Faye Marquez, my Glitter Zen customers, my tribe of healers, chiropractors, networking groups, friends I’ve met through my kids, friends at every age and stage of life, my community, the words of anyone who knows positivity and gratitude are integral parts of who we are and every person in this world who makes planet Earth a special and unique place!
