We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Hayes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Garrett, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have always had a passion for the media and creating media since I was a child. Graduating from high school I knew that I wanted to work in media in one way or another, I also knew that I wanted to start my own legacy with a business. In college I recognized the intricacies of working in the media and that the best means of action would be to make sure my destiny was in my own hands. As such, in college I started my own magazine with two other friends that had a successful six year run. However, as my business partners and I grew older, our goals changed and the magazine would end up being a casualty of that change. When the magazine dropped, I knew I still wanted to work with media so I started Square Visions to do photography, video, and graphic design.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The business I own is called Square Visions which came about as a result for my love and passion for creating media art. One thing that I believe sets this business apart from others is how Square Visions builds on the idea of the creation triangle (good, fast, cheap) where it’s said that you can only pick two (in other words if it’s good and fast, it wont be cheap, etc.). For Square Visions, not only do I believe you can have all three, but a fourth as well, authenticity. So with Square Visions, clients receive great quality at a great price within a reasonable time with authentic perspectives and relationships. It certainly has not been easy to build this business, in fact it took years to turn a profit as there was always the investment back into the business in one way or another, perseverance and humility, however, got the business to where it is today and the potential is still limitless. I work hard day and night, day in and day out constantly learning my craft, practicing my craft, and perfecting my craft because that’s what love and passion is about. Through this journey I’ve learned more about finances, increasing the quality of my product, and finding the appropriate clientele. In the end, I would want the world to know that Square Visions is among the best in the business and will continue to be better, but will always be authentic and for the people.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would head to place like city park, the zoo, the museum (both art and nature and science), five points, the Blair Caldwell Library. For food, La Loma, Welton Street Cafe, Buffalo Soldier Food Truck, Taco De Mexico, Taco Metate. For drinks Legends, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, or Wynkoop.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
When it comes to my story and my successes many have played a hand in what I have accomplished, my family (mom, dad, sisters, and brother) who are my day one and biggest supporters. My partner Han and our two kids Ayden and Sophia are my inspiration and motivation. My support circle of friends, Victor, Dante, Perez, Ray, Derek, Mawule, Ed, Josh, Stephaun, Omar, Val, Brien, all have helped with my success in one way or another, have kept me humble and been foundational in my accomplishments.
