Meet Garrett Hunter | Music Producer / Engineer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Garrett Hunter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Garrett, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I remember when I first moved to LA to study audio engineering, there was a quote sprayed on the side of a building by my apartment. “Tomorrow was yesterday”. Even though it’s vague, I still think about it a lot. It reminds me not to procrastinate tasks or under appreciate moments day to day, because before you know it “tomorrow” becomes “yesterday”.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I feel like I have a genuine interest in the holistic view of music, with no stone left unturned. Every aspect of the music creation process is interesting to me, and I want to be involved in every way. I think it’s a slow process to learn this way, and some times you’ll see you peers who are more specialized excelling faster, but in the end it’s worth it (both creatively and professionally). If a room needs an engineer, I can be an engineer. If a room needs a guitarist or writer, I can fill in. Whichever position is needed I can cover and that’s always been a goal of mine, so seeing it finally start to come to fruition is really satisfying.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I live in North Hollywood, and every day I start off with a cold brew from Cara Vana. The baristas know me by name, and I don’t think you’re getting a stronger iced coffee anywhere. My typical day is spent in the studio, but any time I want to get sun I make the drive to Malibu. There’s plenty of in the cut beach’s and hikes, and it’s one of few places I feel you can actually get away from the city and feel like you’re elsewhere. They’d have to make their way to one of the Salsa & Beer restaurants in t NoHo too. Their burritos and enchiladas are ridiculous.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think some of the most important moments of my career can be credited to E. Dan of ID Labs. When I first came back from engineering school E gave me and JDMadeThis the opportunity to run the B room at his studio, despite not knowing either of us before. Again over a year later, he trusted me to engineer Wiz Khalifa for a weekend of sessions. The experience I gained working at ID Labs is instrumental to my career now, and it all can be attributed to decisions E made on a whim. I’m definitely forever grateful for that.
