Meet Gavan Maitland | Owner & Chef

We had the good fortune of connecting with Gavan Maitland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Gavan, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Smokin bros barbecue was created during our Sunday lunchtime discussion. Every Sunday our family would get together to eat lunch. Brantley the oldest brother moved to Colorado in 2013 and couldn’t find any decent barbecue like how Kansas City, MO does it. So we came up with the idea of a restaurant or food truck. The food truck was the first project.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I “Gavan” studied at Johnson county community college for my chef apprenticeship. Culinary has always been my passion. Our business is family owned and operated. Between my brothers and father we make a great team. With us all having restaurant experience and culinary practice, we bring a great customer service experience and culinary explosion of flavor. We started the business in 2017 to have more family time with our mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s & dementia in 2012. She passed in 2018 and hit us very hard. Our mother was always in the kitchen cooking and baking. Her passion lives through us and our business. The next 2 years our business sky rocketed and gave us hope for a restaurant. Now our brick and mortar is going to be opening soon.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well in the winter time we all as family love to ski and snowboard. So skiing and snowboarding would definitely be on the list. Hiking and paddle boarding in the spring/summer. Pasta jays in Boulder is one of our favorite Italian spots. Fuzco’s pizza in Greeley is a great New Jersey style pizza. Bowling and roller skating is always something we do as a family. Hiking in Boulder, silverthorne, Dillon, Golden and St. Mary’s Glacier is always fun.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Smokin Bros Barbecue would like to thank our friends, family, and customers who have helped us get to where we are today.
