Meet Irma I. De Jesús Rivera | Psychologist Counselor & Professional Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Irma I. De Jesús Rivera and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Irma I., we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I’m very grateful for this opportunity and it’s an honor. The idea behind Mindset and Transitions comes from a necessity which I dealt with myself as a mental health professional during the process of moving to the United States. And which I’ve been working through these past years in my private practice and through the transitions in my personal life. In my years of experience, I identified the necessity of many professionals who want to set new goals, relocate because of new job offers and start life a new in different places and/or new promotions. That’s when my business idea was born, with the purpose of providing support and clarifying goals regarding these transitions from a collaborative and compassionate space. The goal was to help design a roadmap with ideas and a plan of action for my clients, with a vision centered on life balance. Integrating in their path mindfulness practice, self-compassion, and resilience development.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I feel very proud of the professional I’ve become, and it excites me more just thinking about how I can continue to grow in this field and in this country. I come from the resilient island of Puerto Rico, and it has been my greatest teacher. There’s still a long road that needs to be covered regarding the stigma that exists in the search for mental health services and to request professional help to affront any life situation. It’s important for people to know that you don’t need to have a mental health diagnosis in order to request these services. We are here to continue educating about the importance and necessity of reaching out. Talking to a mental health professional or having sessions with a certified coach can be of great help to your mental and emotional wellbeing. My commitment is that my clients can design a mental health roadmap in a healthy manner. In this journey, I’ve learned that transitions can be addressed when we recognize our humanity.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m a mindful eater and a curious person. I’m focused on the food experience so it’s a little bit difficult because I have a lot of places I like! But in a short itinerary I would start with a brunch at Downtown Denver, then connect with nature with a mindful walk in a beautiful park of Colorado (like Pikes Peaks or Rockies Mountains), eat some tacos (I love tacos) and visit a museum or a cultural show.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The path of transition is not traveled alone. In this aspect I’m very grateful because through each transition I’ve met wonderful people. I’ve also had support from my family, my partner, friends, colleagues and life mentors. No less important is the special recognition to my Community in the Puerto Rico Mindfulness Institute, UC San Diego Mindfulness Self Compassion Center and the Latinas Líderes y Emprendedoras of Colorado.
