We had the good fortune of connecting with Jack Hansell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jack, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I have been a homebrewer for over 30 years. In 2001 I had the honor to work for Coors Brewing Company.

During my tenure there I was selected to attend Coors’ internal Brewing School. During this process I learned how to brew professionally and fell in love with the idea of starting a craft brewery.

In 2010, my wife, Allison and I, had a run in with a bear in our house. I ended up getting bit in the leg. When I returned to work my colleagues started calling me Mad Jack. Hence the the name of our brewery.

We wanted to establish our brewery in our community of Bailey, CO. After retiring from Molson Coors in 2015 we started work to open Mad Jacks Mountain Brewery.

We opened our doors in June 2016 and have been growing ever since.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My degree is in Mechanical Engineering from Rutgers University. So I love to solve problems.

I joined the US Army after College and spent 11 years both active and in reserves as a Combat Engineer Officer. The Army taught me a ton about leadership and the importance of taking care of the people who take care of you.

Through out my career the mantra of taking care of my employees has always been my #1 focus.

Was this easy. Of course not. Lots of hard knocks and mistakes along the way. For me I seem to learn more from my mistakes than my successes.

At Mad Jacks Mountain Brewery, we are all about the customer experience. Our Customers are the reason we continue to exist.

We are MAD about BEER! we hope you are too.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would start out in Denver and hit LODO and LODI. One our favorite places is Tom’s Watch Bar next to Coors Field.

After a beer or two we would head towards, GOLDEN and show them the Coors Brewery Facility.

Dinner would be at one of the fine restaurants in Golden.

From there we would drive to our home in Bailey and enjoy an evening on our deck watching the sunset and seeing the stars pop out.

We would then tour our wonderful town of Bailey and surrounding areas.

There would be a visit to the Sasquatch Museum, Lunch at a local restaurant, Beers and live entertainment at Mad Jacks Mountain Brewery. A visit to Glen Isle Resort is a must, to tour the historic main facility and explore their extensive river front property.

Depending on how long our friend was going to stay we would do some fly fishing, hiking, and maybe play some golf.

We would probably take a road trip to Fairplay, Breckenridge, Buena Vista to visit some of the breweries in those towns as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We want to shout out to our Bailey Community. Our neighbors and friends from Bailey have supported our humble business for the past 6 years.

Our motto is Bailey Strong!

We have experienced several tough situations as a community. With each one our community has come together stronger to support each other and those in need.

We love Bailey!
