We had the good fortune of connecting with Janey Hawley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Janey, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Fat Bird was founded in 2020 after my full-time job fell victim to the pandemic-related recession. I don’t do well with spare time. I quickly got to work creating my own marketing company to support several local businesses that remained open.

I saw a need, and I wanted to fill it. I wanted to help businesses that needed it, especially during the pandemic.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?

I want to say it was a breeze, but each day can be a struggle. But I believe the more significant the struggle, the better the success feels. When overcoming challenges, I do my best to remind myself that we are building something that will last and change as needed.

We have built a business that sees a need and does our best to learn and provide to our clients. We genuinely try to provide information and never provide an unnecessary service.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
First off…YAY! I love it when my friends come to visit.

Day 1: We would go paddleboarding at Chatfield State Park. We, of course, bring some local beers and enjoy a lovely day in the sun. We would grill out at the house for dinner and enjoy each other’s company.

Day 2: Walk into Old Town Littleton and enjoy local shops and eateries. Dinner at Cafe Terracotta.

Day 3: Drive to Idaho Springs for a “semi-early” hike and then go to Westbound & Down Brewing Company to eat and enjoy some local beers.

Day 4: I have my version of a Downtown Crawl. We wander through downtown Denver and go from restaurant to restaurant. We have an adult beverage and an appetizer everywhere we go. Some must-stops are…Jax Fish House for some Emerson Oysters and the Oxford for a special cocktail.

Day 5: Relax and enjoy some brunch at Toast in Littleton. And then head to the Platte for a “Float the River Day.”

Day 6: Hang out at the house and enjoy some home cooking.

Day 7: Goodbye dinner at YaYas Euro Bistro

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
BNI Colorado and the support team behind my chapter, BNI Blue Ocean, is a group I want to point out. Their support and guidance through the start of my business were paramount to our success. Also, my business partner, Lisa Kindsvater, is the Bird that gets it done! She is the pillar that helps keep all of the Fat Birds in flight.
