We had the good fortune of connecting with JASON MINTY and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi JASON, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Quite simply – Becker Minty was born from a thought process of ‘what’s missing in Australia (retail wise)?’

Having worked in the airline industry for many years prior to opening my own business, I had always been an avid shopper, spending most of my layover times out and about, discovering new things and bringing them back to Australia, either for myself, my family or my friends. I realised that ‘shopping or buying’ was something I just loved, and had been doing for over a decade without really giving it a name.

After leaving the industry, I had lunch with a friend who was also at a crossroad career wise and we decided to investigate opening a store/boutique together – bringing unexpected and unique items into Australia. This was 16 years ago.

This started a thought process of business planning, thinking about everything that was either missing or unknown here Australia. We spent months planning and curating what our Store, Becker Minty could look like, and how it would differ from any other Australian offering.

Four months in, we did our first global buying trip and curated an offering unique in every possible way. Planning was an essential part of the process as it enabled us to easily make decisions on what we thought our product range should be. We set boundaries and criteria, which to this day, I try to stick to.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Since 2007 BECKER MINTY has offered the unique and unexpected, with collections including home décor, art, furniture, lighting, fashion for men and women, antique and modern jewellery, perfume, luxury candles and gifts. Considered design is our byword and the expression and appreciation of innate individual style is our passion.

Inveterate travellers and explorers, we constantly seek treasures in far-flung corners. Our criterion is simple: to bring home that which delights. We proudly foster our relationships with artists and designers and carry many brands exclusively.

Much loved by locals as their hidden gem, BECKER MINTY also has a strong following among the international design community.

Surviving the GFC of 2008 and more recently the COVID Pandemic is probably our biggest achievement to date. The past 16 years have not been easy, but determination and hard work paid off. We consistently look to do better, we try to plan ahead and makes changes before it’s too late. We have learnt that expansion too quickly is not good and that contraction and change is smart when necessary.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If visiting our new store in Hobart, Tasmania, there are a multitude of fantastic places to visit.

Firstly, Salamanca Market, where our Store and Dining Room are located, is possibly the most famous market in Australia, it’s a great place to start. Then, every trip to Hobart must include MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) – the most spectacular gallery in Australia. This incredible development has single handedly changed the face of Tasmania. Lunch at Faro is a must.

Day trips to Bruny Island, Port Arthur, Wine Glass Bay and my all time favourite Pennicotts Tasman Island Cruise (4 hours half day). The most spectacular scenery and wildlife ever.

Breakfast. venues should include Born in Brunswick, Room for a Pony, Sisterhood, Berta and Pigeonhole Bakery.

Dinner venues should include Institute Polaire, Peppina at the Tasman, Aloft, Suzy Lucks,

Wineries visits should include Home Hill, Stefano Lubiana, Frogmore Creek, Pooley, Derwent Valley Vineyard.

Best bars – Sony, Ogee, Willing Brothers and Mary Mary.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My business wouldn’t be here without the continued support of my team, my suppliers, my clients and my artists. All very noteworthy in the success of Becker Minty.
