We had the good fortune of connecting with Jason Van Vleet and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jason, what do you attribute your success to?
Branding is a metaphor for success in life. Define your purpose simply and repeat actions needed for a desired outcome consistently and frequently. Commitment and focus have been behind my most successful ventures. When I get convoluted, that is when I’ve experienced mediocre results or simply just failed.

Branding marketing is no different. Too much information at first will get deluded and lost in translation. The image should be easy to identify and remember and the tag line should be easy to understand and digest. If you can’t understand who and what in 2-3 seconds, like driving by in a car and seeing it on the billboard with just a glimpse, there is too much. This is true of all platforms. More information can follow, but this top name, logo and tagline is the most important to get your audience’s attention. Then, repeat the message frequently and consistently over a long period of time until your name and message are “Branded” into your target audience’s mind. Recognition = trust, which is what you are really building.

When it comes to a TV commercial, turn the audio off when done. If don’t know what the commercial is about without the sound, your visual story and branding message is not strong enough. Consider what visuals you need entirely to convey your message and let your audio reinforce and enhance that experience.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Producing any kind of visual medium is an art whether short or long form. What excites me the most is observing a desired reaction or outcome that was a goal set from the beginning. It can be as simple as making someone laugh or cry within any given moment. There can be much planning and effort that can lead to just those simple emotions; like the timing of a comedian or climax of a dramatic movie scene. Not everyone gets the opportunity to do what they love and I feel extremely fortunate to able to. There were moments I wanted to give up because times were just getting too hard, but others around me encouraged to keep me going. And then I remembered, what else would I really want to do? So perseverance is my lesson over time. Just keep going, but if you are not enjoying it, then it’s okay to switch gears and spend your time doing something that is more full-filling.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Every city in Colorado has something unique about it, but Denver has it all. Big city life, small town living and plenty of adventure everywhere. When it comes to nightlife, I love going downtown. There are restaurants, pubs and breweries everywhere. Not to mention entertainment. Red Rocks is also got to be the coolest venues anywhere in the world for concerts set in the foothills on the outskirts of Denver. In and around the foothills there are so many outdoor hiking and biking trails too. But of them all, the one little place I just have to take my friends to is a little known restaurant called the Kokoro bowl. This is just some plain and simple, but really tasty Japanese food. I recommend the Beef Bowl & Rice!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My greatest influence truly has come the dedication and the passions of my own customers. And perhaps more importantly, reactions from their own audience and customers. When people care about the outcomes of whatever it is you do, it makes the job rewarding for all in involved.
