We had the good fortune of connecting with Jen Weis and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jen, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I love this question! As a child and young adult, I was shy, insecure, and easily intimidated. Over the years I’ve learned that taking risks causes us to rise to the occasion, whatever it might be, and step in to fear with a bold face. As a young single mother and knew I could make decisions that would keep me in a limited mindset and constrained lifestyle, or try to make the situation better for myself and my daughter by taking risks. Although taking risks is challenging, every positive change in my career happened because I made a deliberate decision to leave the warmth and security of my comfort zone. Taking advantage of opportunities, when they were presented, is what catapulted my career forward. This inspired not only the growth of new skills and meeting influential people in the community, but also made me realize I’m capable of so much more that I thought. The feeling of growing self-confidence is addicting. You start to question what else you’re capable of and find that you start saying “yes” to risk much more often.
When the opportunity to take a risk arises, it’s invigorating and at the same time makes you want to throw up, or maybe that’s just me! Either way, I see this as a sure sign that you should do it. This doesn’t mean taking on something you can’t handle but we all inherently know what we can and can’t do, however there’s a fine line between that and letting the voice of fear talk you out of it saying, “you can’t”, “you’re not ready”, etc. Sometimes you need to say “yes”, then figure it out along the way. As Feng Shui consultant, I believe the Universe delivers what we ask for and it’s our responsibility to respond confidently by grabbing ahold of it! I once saw a meme that said something like “Universe, please send me a sign” the Universe answered with clear sign and the person’s response was “I think I’ll wait for a signier sign”. This makes me laugh but it’s so true! Don’t turn away from a gift when it’s presented. Know you have the abilities to be successful and the risk will pay off.
Since starting my practice with Feng Shui, I’ve been able to continue on this path but with a deeper knowledge of how to attract helpful people, the right opportunities, and the perfect circumstances, through our home and office environments. Now, my goal is to inspire others to connect with their inner strength, take risks, and make the visions for their future a reality through this same practice.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
There are many ways to apply Feng Shui. Some of those include home and family life, health, organized spaces, spiritual pursuits, etc. My focus is working with individuals who are entrepreneurs, business professionals, and in real estate. I connect well to these folks because I have a similar mindset and have experienced countless positive affects in my career by implementing Feng Shui. I’m excited to be partnering with local custom home builders and interior designers, in order to expand the reach and benefit all parties. I’m also looking forward to teaching classes to realtors statewide on how to apply Feng Shui to their listings.
Taking risks and following my intuition. These have gotten me to where I am today. I take risks when I know I need to. When I know it’s the only way forward and I’m all about forward momentum! The journey has been easier than I anticipated. I think we get in our heads too often and this is a huge challenge. I have found that practicing Feng Shui encourages us to visualize our desired outcome, do something physical in our space, and trust the Universe to deliver. I have had many opportunities arise and helpful people come out of the woodwork, and this has made the path much easier to navigate. It actually blows my mind at times.
The lesson I’ve learned is to do what I can to the best of my ability and trust that the outcome will take care of itself. I like to control situations and I’m learning to let go. It’s painful at times!
Instead of letting the world know anything, I’d rather the message find the few who it matters to. Some people will go through life missing, or denying, the connection they have with their environment and how it impacts their daily experience. It’s so simple yet profound. The places we spend most of our time have a subconscious effect on our feelings, mood, thoughts, decisions, and behavior. This causes those around us to respond and it’s either beneficial or destructive. There’s a lot of emphasis on having a healthy mind, self-development, reading, podcasts, working out, meditation, etc but if your environment doesn’t support these things, they’ll lose much of their impact.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Although I like to control situations, I’m not really one to make detailed plans. I enjoy spontaneity during times like these. All I know is that the following would be on the agenda… A morning sesh of outdoor yoga followed by brunch with mimosas. This all precedes our 90 minute massage and a facial. An overnight stay, or two, at Hotel Tiatro. Sometime during the week, we’ have lunch at Rioja. Nibbles at Corridor 44, enjoying any one of their countless champagnes, outdoor, watching passersby and gushing over their adorable dogs! A show at Comedy Works is always a good time. All of the eating and drinking calls for at least three intense workouts in the gym. Being music lovers, I’d make sure we paid a visit to Ophelias Electric Soapbox. Lastly, we’d make time for a hike near Red Rocks, or drive over to Chatfield Reservoir for afternoon paddle-boarding.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I had two very powerful mentors in my life. The first was the owner of a store that I managed in my 20’s, Bart Hanks. He pushed for excellence and taught me some very important lessons that I carry with me today. Some lessons were very direct, and others were taught with a hint of humor, which I appreciated.
The second is Wendy McHenry. I had the fortune of working alongside her for most of my 30’s and admired how she approached her career and family. Her way of being deliberate, dedicated, and thoughtful in all she does has earned a tremendous amount of respect by her peers. Wendy gave me the gift of her time, knowledge, and guidance, for which I am grateful
The most important characteristic of Bart and Wendy is that they practice what they preach. Their bar is high and that has always inspired me. They also let me fail at times but would encourage me to get back up and get stronger during the process.
Lastly, my mother, husband, and daughter. My mom is no longer with us but I try to accomplish all I can because she always told me I could do anything I put my mind to. I want to make her proud. My husband listens, supports, and to encourages me on a daily basis, he’s a saint. I’m also motivated by my daughter. I want to lead by example, so she knows she too can follow her passion and be successful at whatever she finds joy in.
