We had the good fortune of connecting with Jennifer Dyer and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jennifer, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a creative person, I’ve had so many ideas throughout my life in what I could do to create my own business. The ideas and thoughts for what direction I could take come to mind frequently. It wasn’t until recently when I started to realize the joy I get from creating our home and gardening that I realized perhaps something I love and am passionate about already would be a great starting point for launching a business. I’m a designer so idea of telling my home story in a highly visual way appealed to me. Since I have fun doing my home design and gardening already, it seemed that taking it to a potential income generating level would only be a bonus to something I already enjoy.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
In my day job, I’m a Creative Director at my own design business, Brink Design Studio. I’ve been a designer for many years and still love doing it. When I discovered the passion I had for working on our small piece of “land” we own (our house and large backyard essentially), I found myself compelled to start documenting some of the things I was doing. And that’s why I started my blog, Beneath the Maple. I’m very proud of some of the landscaping updates we’ve built and what I’ve learned about installing drip systems and taking care of a vegetable garden, for instance. It’s visually beautiful and uses a lot of my creative skills—but it’s so opposite of looking at a computer screen for graphic design. So in a way, this hobby (now turned into the beginning of a new blog business) is essential in my happiness and having less screen time after my work day is over. It checks the other boxes I need in order to feel fulfilled in my daily life.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Denver has been my home for over 10 years since I moved here from the midwest, and to this day, my favorite season here is summer when there are so many fun events going on in the city. One of my favorite spots to bring out of town guests to is Acreage by Stem Ciders in Lafayette. There is no better place to see the sunset outdoors overlooking the Rockies. It’s a true Colorado experience. I love an afternoon spent walking the shops and stopping in the restaurants of Tennyson street. The Highlands area is one of my top locations to bring friends as well. We love El Five and Mizu Izakaya Sushi in LoHi. People would be surprised of the wine tasting afternoons you can create for yourself in Denver, too, with destinations you can look up online with a wine tasting map of the city. Lastly, hitting a farmer’s market on the weekend is a definite favorite and there are many throughout the city each week.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My husband, Sterling, deserves some recognition for encouraging me to start my blog. He and I spend many evenings chatting about our visions for our future home and entrepreneurial ventures. We talk about owning more land and ways we could create experiences, own vineyards or build more in this new dream location. Plus, he’s a builder so he has the creative mind on executing some of my ideas, which is helpful!
