We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jenny, how do you think about risk?
Risk-taking has always been in my blood! I believe it is truly essential for growth and living life to its fullest.
In my career, I started out always wanting to work for a firm — that was my safe zone. But as I started to learn more and more while I was at firms, I soon realized that eventually, I would need to take the leap. The world of interior design is so broad and I was always working under the builder’s umbrella. I wanted to branch out and offer services beyond the construction realm of interior design. My experience working at design/build firms laid the foundation and I am forever grateful for all of the knowledge and experience those years have contributed, but it got to a point where I just knew that the next career move would require me to take on more risk than I ever imagined. Starting my own business was full of exciting daydreams, but also interwoven with so much responsibility, liability, and personal/professional risk. Needless to say, I am glad I took the risk. There will always be ups and downs in entrepreneurship but the risk makes the reward that much sweeter.
What should our readers know about your business?
J. Reiko Design + Co is a full-service interior design studio that takes a holistic approach to interior design. We strive to always consider the architecture that informed the space, the people that will be living in the space, and how all of that relates to and becomes the spirit of home. We love creating deeper connections between people and their homes by guiding them along the journey of transforming their space to align with their needs + lifestyle.
After nearly a decade of working at design/build firms in Denver and Northern Colorado, it was time. The path wasn’t easy and working in a construction-based industry is always full of new surprises –some good, and some not so good (aka learning experiences). Much of the industry and business cannot be taught in school. It took many years of watching, learning, making mistakes, fixing mistakes, creating spaces, and working with tradespeople and clients from all walks of life to land here, but we are very very glad to be here.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Fort Collins has so many, but here are my favorites:
Food: Tasty Harmony
Drinks: Social
Hang Out: hike or hang out at Horsetooth reservoir, float the Poudre River, go see a show at the Mishawaka Amphitheater, or ride your bike all over the city to see it all.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
