We had the good fortune of connecting with Jenny White and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jenny, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I love this question so much because the past year has really taught me that even when you’re already “successful” or have found prosperity in your craft/business/sport/passion – there is ALWAYS room for more learning and more growth.

When Walt and I decided to create Wander Beats, it was really us putting a brand to the work we were already getting booked for, mostly through referrals and word of mouth. Between the two of us, we have well over three decades of experience, and it’s always been the most important priority for each of us that we are at the top of our game in our technique, music knowledge & collection, stage presence, ability to handle technical issues, knowledge of the gear, etc.

It was really fun to already have great confidence in our skillset as DJs and set out to create something fresh with Wander Beats. Our biggest focus with what we’re creating here is to merge the skillset we already have with the delivery of an incredible client experience throughout their entire planning process that goes above and beyond. We also had a goal of combining it with our love of travel (“Wander” Beats) and set out to take more out of town gigs.

We have the best time getting to know our clients, to get a deep understanding of their vibe and sound style – and then to deliver the party so that it’s completely unforgettable and memorable for them and their guests. There’s been a learning curve throughout the creation and execution of this for me, and it’s been a blast to create our process from the start and put myself in our clients shoes. Creating Wander Beats and setting a standard for our customer experience has even up-leveled what we deliver behind the booth, which is something I never imagined.

Looking back at it, the most important factor behind our success with Wander Beats was taking our seasoned experience and becoming open minded that we still had so much room for growth.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a professional DJ since 2008 and the road to get where I am today has been full of so many ebbs and flows. What always keeps me going is the feeling of seeing so many different people come together and share a love of music and dancing for a few hours. It stirs something in my soul like nothing else and I feel so blessed to be able to witness it from the perspective I do.

Early on in my career, it felt like a lot of my time was spent having to prove that I was just as capable of DJing as the men in my industry. Rather than let it get me down, get really pissed off about it or stay hyper-focused on it, I let it ignite a desire to get to the point technically where my skillset was undeniable and I was just booked. I wanted to be a part of more equality in our industry and I hope that I’ve been able to make at least a dent.

I became a mother in 2011 (my family is my greatest love) and it’s provided me so many lessons within my career as well. There have been times that I’ve had to say no to things that I deeply felt I wanted at the time, but looking back helped to steer me to a better place. I’m constantly grateful that my career gives me the flexibility to be with my son so often, and even share my world with him on an incredible level.

My journey (even, & especially the ebbs!) has led me to the place over the past 8 years that I’m often booked as “direct support” for major electronic music artists (particularly house, commercial EDM and bass music) and I love this so much. Although I have a passion to play an all night set or headline and completely set the tone for the night, I’ve developed a great love for the art of opening for artists with different sound styles. It’s so much fun for me to study the artist that I’m setting the stage for and create the perfect energy and sound for the crowd to be fully ready for them (and enjoy the direct support set just as much!). I’ve gotten the opportunity to open for hundreds of absolutely incredible sought after artists and it’s been the greatest honor, stretching me in so many directions. This, my love of connecting with the crowd, and being in the flow of a great set are my favorite things about DJing.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Colorado is full of so many hidden gems, it’s a treasure to have family or a friend visit and show them my favorite spots!

As much as I’m immersed in the Denver music and the nightlife scene within my career, as a tour guide I would I would absolutely have to add stops to some of my cherished venues like Temple Denver, Red Rocks Ampitheatre, Mission Ballroom and Beacon. It’s at the point in Denver that it’s a tough choice any night of the week to decide which artist to see because we have so many sick shows to choose from!

But…I actually live a really quiet life and my perfect CO day is wandering without agenda in one of our sweet spots – and it has to include incredible vegan food.

In Denver, I love to kick off the day at Whole Sol (keep adding more locations you guys, I’m going for one on every corner!!!), head to Wash Park for the Five Star Salt Caves or Easy Float. Some of my favorite spots for happy hour or dinner are Blue Sushi Sake Grill (seriously so many vegan options), Happy Camper (so much fun) or Perdida Kitchen (my favorite date night spot). I often will head to Improper City to hang out for a bit on my laptop, or catch one of their vegan events.

I will literally drive all the way up to Breckenridge just to eat at Piante Pizza and love to check out Breck, Frisco and the surrounding areas. The skate park in Frisco is one of my son’s favorite places and we love to take trips all around the front range just to explore different skateboarding spots.

I lived in Boulder County for a long time, and head back whenever I can. I love to take guests to Snooze for brunch and Acreage to hang all afternoon with a hard cider in hand and the most amazing views. Ghost Box Pizza in downtown Lafayette has quickly become a new fav and I love how the downtown area is growing. Pearl Street is always so much fun to walk around and I’ve been loving the new Avanti (everyone can find something incredible there!). You might notice that I ALWAYS have a cup of tea in my hands when I DJ – Ka Cha House of Tea on Pearl is a tea spot I’ve adored for many years.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am so blessed to have the most incredible family and friends who have supported me through thick and thin, but I want to shout out to my husband Walt and my son Kai.

Walt and Kai offer me absolutely unconditional support on a daily basis and literally bring out the pom poms to cheer me on through it all. Not only can I not imagine tackling the demands of my career and life without them, I wouldn’t want to. They make it so much fun and give me the warmest, safest space to reach for the stars. I’m beyond blessed to have them on my side.
