We had the good fortune of connecting with Jermaine Amado and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jermaine, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
When I first started out my photography business, I was working year round in Denver and I had my choice of days off after years of establishing a good online presence. You can view that as a “healthy” balance.

Over the past 9 years I started to travel heavily because I now had an established high and low season. I am out of the country 5-months out of the year and the rest of the time I am here in Denver. While I am in town, I just work… a lot. I don’t recognize days of the week, birthday’s, or holidays. I just work when I can because I love traveling that much!

But I also don’t view it as work. I have been a photographer for 20 years and my life is photography. I am my work and my work is me.

So even though I may not have a “healthy” balance anymore, it’s worth it for me.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What I the most proud of is how long I’ve been a photographer and how much I still love it. My first photography job was in the summer 2005 and here I am 20 years later and I’m still happy to go to every shoot. I have a great time with all my clients; from newborns, family portraits, senior photos, weddings, and events. I love my work and I don’t see myself doing anything else.

I think I got to where I am professionally today is by not viewing it as work and not counting my hours. Aside from going to photoshoots and editing, there is a lot more involved in running a business. I spend a lot of long nights updating my website and creating marketing material. No one pays me for these hours. I do it because it’s fun for me and I hope that I will be rewarded in the future for my efforts.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week visit is not enough to enjoy Denver because all the beautiful nature is outside of Denver! In the city for food and drinks you must visit the RiNo district, around Union Station, and South Broadway. You also have to see the Big Blue Bear next to the convention center.

Walking around Red Rocks is also a must when visiting Denver. It’s a magical experience if you could make it to a show there.

For some mountains, I suggest you hike up St. Mary’s Glacier. You can also drive about 75 minutes west and visit Dillon lake in the mountains. There’s a beautiful view point named Sapphire Point for a breathtaking view of the lake. Along the way you can walk around the quaint town of Idaho Springs.

Another magical place to see with beautiful rock formations is Garden of the Gods. It’s located about 75 minutes south of Denver.

I’m sure you can do all this in a week!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am able to travel in and out of Colorado because I don’t have an apartment. While I’m here, I stay in my sister’s house. And when I’m out of the country, that’s where I keep all my photography equipment. I give her money and she provides me a roof over my head. It’s a great deal!
