We had the good fortune of connecting with Jes Waring and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jes, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because it just fit. Everything about it, I’ve always been obsessed with art, the emotion, expression, effort, the many different forms that it takes. Its an outlet and an inlet. It allows people to see into you and your mind. To show who you are, what you think, what you feel, etc. Art is always changing, growing, ebbing and flowing just like the rest of us and the universe. I’ve always used art to express myself in different forms, hair just really clicked and it made me feel like me. I started coloring my hair in high school, sometimes professionally sometimes me myself and I in the bathroom mirror with a box of lift and deposit pink from Walmart (PLEASE DO NOT TRY AT HOME). Coloring my hair really allowed me to experiment and see who I was and what I liked, it was exciting. Vivids weren’t as popular 14 yrs ago but still had its presence especially the “scene kids”. I was very shy but having that outlet of expression helped me step outside of my box I loved the different looks I could create with them. Even if my head looked like “a work in progress”, Because I was, it was and I still am, forever changing and trying new things.
Working with my hands and having to think on my feet (literally) is where I thrive. There is always a surprise waiting around the corner with hair because there are so many different variables that come into play. I’m able to connect with people on a daily basis in so many different ways and there’s always something new.
I’m also very independent and definitely follow my own path so traditional career choices just didn’t feel right. I needed more freedom and control of where I want to go and how I want to grow personally and professionally. Sometimes its a bit taxing to handle every aspect of a business but its definitely worth it to me.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think what sets me apart from others is that when I create I work based on feeling not just a pattern of “this is how you do this” I really take it and make it my own but not just my own I bring what you, my client, wants and needs. For lack of a better word the “vibe” that you bring as well. I want to give you something better than you imagined that still fits you but brings out the best of you. What I’m most proud of is how far ive come. I couldn’t have imagined I’d be where I am. A salon owner, running my own business, creating every day, having fun and meeting new people while also earning a living. Still with so much room to grow and so many other avenues I could go with it. I’m most excited to see where I am in about 10-15 more years, the things I can create and the people I will meet.
To get where I am Professionally it took a lot of hard work, focus, determination, failure and therapy. True growth is never easy, there’s always hurdles and set backs with every success. You can cry about it but you’ve got a time limit cause you’ve got to pick it up and keep pushing if you want to make it to wherever your going, even if you don’t know where that is yet. Overcoming challenges can be as “simple” as talking to a friend, taking a step back and reassessing what you’ve got going on and other times you need a professional.
Some things ive learned along the way are to first be true to yourself, its really hard to be what other people want you to be all the time. People pleasing will lead to burn out REAL QUICK. Never stop learning, listen to your clients, drink water and be nice until its time not to be nice. Don’t listen to nay sayers, there’s always going to be someone booing you from the nose bleed seats. Have fun! If what your doing doesn’t bring you joy in some way, try something different if you have that option!
World & Universe, id like you to know that my brand, Hells Belles, is me, its you, its all of us, a beautiful wild force to be reckoned with. I will always strive to be a safe space and human for you to come to and to trust in life and with your hair. As your stylist we go through a lot together. A lot of life, the good and the bad and even more in between. I want to show you who you are when you need that pick me up and who you are capable of being when you’re unsure, I want to give you that break from reality you need or that 20 min nap you haven’t seen in 7 years. I want to make you feel as beautiful as you truly are and make sure you don’t forget it. If you want my full story just book an appt and let me know where to start, that one will take some time, its been a wild ride!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A few places id recommend would be the penny arcade in Manitou. Hiking is always a good choice, nothing crazy if they’re from out of town so somewhere like Mt. Cutler its not a super hard hike but you get plenty of great views.. The hot springs are always a great go to for a day trip. Old Colorado City is cool to hang out and plenty of places to grab a bite like Mother Muffs Or Bon Tons Cafe. I would suggest Hapa in Denver for sushi lovers its my absolute favorite currently and Bird dog BBQ in Colorado Springs. Rhinos is my go to place to hang out and grab a drink and some wings.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I wouldn’t be here at all if it wasn’t for my mom, she put me through hair school and really set me up for life. She’s always been very supportive in my career, always my number one cheerleader even when I’ve cut her hair a little too short that one time 7 years ago at Hair Villa. Love you Mom!
My best friends have always been there, they’ve seen it all. The ups, the downs, letting me try ” this or that” on them. Reminding me who I am and that I’m damn good at what I do whenever I forget or have an off day. Thanks for always having my back and giving me that push when I need it.
My clients for sure! Y’all keep me going and let me do what I love. You put your complete trust in me and I couldn’t thank you enough! sometimes I am a hair magician, sometimes I’m a therapist, your bff, your hype squad, yall keep me on my toes and I love it. I have been able to meet people from all walks of life and I truly appreciate every single one of you, I freakin love all of ya!
I’ve learned so much from a lot of different people in the last 11 years of hair, the many other stylists ive worked with, classes from other artists and educators, watching you tube after you tube on new techniques before actual online hair education was a thing. I’ve also been able to learn and grow through my clients especially when you’re the occasional mind reader to get that perfect inspo translated to real life.
