We had the good fortune of connecting with Jess Elliott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jess, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
The key habits that I attribute to my success are anchored in a commitment to growth, the courage to take risks and pivot when necessary, and steadfast alignment with my passions and core beliefs. I firmly believe that “success” is more about the pursuit of growth as a lifelong adventure, rather than a single destination along the way. To that end, I approach each day with an insatiable curiosity and a drive to push my boundaries to discover where (and if) they end.
One of the best pieces of advice I received from a veteran coach was “to assume you’re the least knowledgeable person in the room.” Embracing this ego-less mindset allowed me to enter all conversations, experiences, and challenges as a student eager to learn from the world and the dynamic people around me. As a result, my perspective, knowledge base, and skill set expanded significantly beyond what I could have achieved alone.
Additionally, I embrace calculated risks and view them not as obstacles but as opportunities for growth. The ability to pivot when needed, fueled by a combination of inner alignment and a strategic mindset, has been instrumental in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of my professional journey. Finally, remaining resolutely aligned with my passions and core beliefs serves as my North Star, providing a guiding light that keeps me rooted and focused on what is most important. This three-pronged approach to life is my roadmap that guides the pursuit of my best self, which to me is the ultimate form of success.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Unfettered by convention and fueled by an unyielding spirit of innovation, I thrive on charting unexplored paths and transcending boundaries. As a dedicated adventurer and ultrarunner, I’ve discovered that the richest rewards and deepest fulfillment arise from forging new trails—whether in the wilderness or the dynamic landscape of business. Fueled by this trailblazing ethos, I am passionately driven to redefine and elevate the bar of success by prioritizing the journey as much, though likely more, than the milestones along the way.
I embarked on a slightly unconventional career evolution, starting in the competitive sports world and progressing
through entrepreneurship to ultimately delve into marketing. In 2018, I launched TAG Performance, starting with less than $2,000 withdrawn from a mandatory retirement account. Presently, TAG Performance caters to a global audience, supporting endurance athletes in ~37 countries. This experience not only honed my entrepreneurial acumen but also cultivated a passion for and first-hand knowledge of effective business strategy and marketing tactics. Ultimately, my background in coaching coupled with my entrepreneurial endeavors positioned me as a unique candidate in the job market and facilitated a professional portfolio at esteemed organizations like Exos at Google, The IRONMAN Group, Informa, and Boulderthon.
Reflecting on my journey, the key lessons I’ve gathered center around a dedication to continuous growth, a boldness to embrace risks and adapt when needed, and an unwavering alignment with my passions and core values. I’ve come to understand that “success” is not merely a static destination but a dynamic journey, a continuous exploration that pushes beyond perceived boundaries. As I navigate each day, I carry an insatiable curiosity and an eagerness to challenge my limits, continually questioning where they may lead and if they exist at all. What I want the world to know about me is my appreciation for the fluidity of success, where the pursuit of growth is one of life’s most rewarding adventures.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
For me, the magic of Colorado lives above the tree line. When my best friend returns this spring, I anticipate a week of outdoor adventures including hiking to frozen alpine lakes, climbing at one of our many indoor gyms, trail running throughout the front range, persuading her to try nordic skiing, and visiting a broad range of eateries. As someone who loves options, collective eateries like Avanti, Rosetta Hall, and Denver Central Market are always great destinations with delicious dishes and a sense of novelty that everyone enjoys. Lastly, we can’t forget about shopping! Pearl Street Mall in Boulder is always my top choice and a great place to find gifts or mementos to celebrate a great vacation. I bet her daughters would love treats from Peace, Love, and Chocolate!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
While I’m fortunate to have several incredibly talented and impactful mentors, the most important people to acknowledge are my parents. To my unwavering pillars of strength, my parents—thank you for being the steadfast mountains in the landscape of my life. Your unwavering support, boundless love, and enduring patience have been the bedrock of my life without which I could never have leapt so boldly into the unknown, remained standing against the winds of adversity, or found my footing on unstable grounds. To my mom and dad—thank you.
