We had the good fortune of connecting with Jessica Kinkelaar and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jessica, we’d love for you to start things off by telling us something about your industry that we and others not in the industry might be unaware of?
Many people don’t realize how much of the equine industry is all around them and how easy it is to get involved with! Barns are everywhere throughout not only Colorado, but much of the Denver metro area! They vary from show stables to small boarding facilities or rescues to huge lesson barns and include many different disciplines (hunter/jumper, dressage, western, pleasure, etc). Many offer summer camps or clinics for both children and adult, there are lesson opportunities for all ages if they want to dabble in the sport, as well as different venues that provide trail riding, volunteer opportunities or free access to watch huge rated shows. There is so much to learn about horses, and many many employment options – working in a tack or feed store or as a ranch hand, photographer, barn manager, hauler, farrier, vet assistant, course designer, judge, trainer, equine massager, groom, saddle fitter or salesperson, and even in with equine assisted therapy to name just a few! It’s an exciting world to be active in, even at the smallest level! Call around, visit some facilities, see how you can get involved.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Little Raven Ranch has worked extremely hard to develop a name for ourselves in the equine industry. We’ve strived for the reputation of being a top-quality horse boarding and training facility in the Denver area and have achieved just that! Word of mouth has spread and we get continuously noticed and recommended by other professionals across the state. We boast an outstanding facility with many amenities for both horses and boarders (heated barn and indoor arena, multiple riding rings and fields, access to trails, private lockers, fly systems in summer months, gated entrance, hot/cold wash rack, multiple turnout and boarding options, trailer parking and live on staff to name just a few) In October, we just hit the 5 year milestone of being open. There are no words to describe the first 5 years in a business.. Developments and changes within the organization have simply proven to be expected. Procedures and structure modifications are ongoing, as well as slight variations in customer base, staffing and many other adaptions we’ve had to adjust to. Looking back over the years it is quite emotional the hurdles we’ve overcome, the clientele we’ve built, and the endless memories we have to cherish. The standouts from the past few years include being recognized as Littletons Best in Horse Boarding 2019. We have also hosted numerous Charity horse shows at our location. These have allowed us to include vendors from neighboring communities and support their businesses, as well as raise money through the events for non-profit organizations including the Happy Dog Ranch, and Hope through Horses. Little Raven loves to help our fellow neighbors in any way we can… We collect donations for various equine assisted groups in the Colorado area, make and donate Christmas ornaments to the Childrens Hospitals and surrounding nursing homes and also have adopted a family during the holiday season through GiveDenver.org. Our mission includes not only the great care of our horses, and clients but doing our part for the community as a whole. If we are to set standards of excellence, it should be a standard of excellence that we can carry through in all aspects of what we do. Giving back, taking pride in the Colorado state and the people surrounding us, and finding ways to continuously do more, have now become a symbol of what we want to be known as- a business who honestly cares.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Kindra Warner with Virado Equestrian and Erin Bownds of Chimney Creek have both been a huge factor in our facility. We work hard together to create an atmosphere of learning, promoting each other, and helping all the students and clients as well as equines. They offer amazing programs for all levels, are extremely knowledgeable in regards to riding, training, and health or their horses, and are simply fun to be around!
