We had the good fortune of connecting with Joey Afman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joey, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My name is Joey, and I am a spray paint artist based in Colorado. This form of art captivates me. Having been a spray paint artist for two years, the moment I held a spray can, I became addicted; that’s when my art truly awakened and my passion flared. Following the unexpected passing of my father and facing personal challenges, spray painting has been a therapeutic medium for me, providing a way to channel my emotions and creativity. I am passionate about my work and eager to share my newly discovered love for art with everyone.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart is my unique creativity and what I bring to the spray paint art world. The beginning was filled with challenges. However, with a supportive network to fuel and kindle my passion, I became the catalyst to launch my own business. It felt natural to channel my emotions into art and, in doing so, hopefully encourage others to pursue their dreams as well. In art creation, there are no mistakes, only the openness to new ideas and the flexibility to adapt to change. It sets the precedent that anything is achievable if you set your mind to it. If you have a dream, chase it and turn it into reality; the only obstacle is yourself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The first destination I’d recommend to a friend visiting Colorado is Meow Wolf. With its Alice in Wonderland vibe, Meow Wolf serves as an artistic playground that whisks you away into a realm of creativity and wonder. Following an exhilarating adventure at Meow Wolf. A trip to the Rocky Mountain National Park is essential; there’s no better way to appreciate Colorado than immersing yourself in nature with a hike. In the mood for some humor? Downtown’s Comedy Works is the place to be, where you can enjoy a show that’ll have you laughing until it hurts. And of course, a visit to Colorado wouldn’t be complete without experiencing a concert at Red Rocks, surrounded by the great outdoors – it’s an iconic Colorado experience.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There is a small group of people to whom I owe my passion and success. Without them, I wouldn’t have had the drive to pursue my dreams. All my family and friend’s have been an amazing support system and i couldnt be happier. My Dad was the catalyst for my artistic journey; his sudden passing was difficult, but it rekindled my passion for art, and I know he would be proud. My dear friend Kelly stood by me as I fought depression, offering words of encouragement to pursue my art, recognizing the love I had for it. Another cherished friend, Brittney, spent countless nights with me, listening to my wild ideas and plans for future projects, keeping me on track with my creative process. She encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. My middle school teacher, Mr. Bruce Gomez, was an inspiration, imparting his knowledge of art and providing me with the tools to succeed.
