We had the good fortune of connecting with John Hunt and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi John, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
“Consistency is key” – consistency takes discipline and discipline is something that many don’t care to take to the extreme. Focusing on building goals, making plans to attain goals, re-working the plan, and continue to make progress (big or small) daily —- this is all part of consistency which takes discipline. It’s much like your health…if you aren’t disciplined in a routine or plan…..you don’t see results. I learned about discipline in many aspects of life….in athletics in my youth through college….in working jobs as an employee throughout my life and once I stepped out on my own as self employed in 2010…..routine, consistency, and discipline have been a focus…..I have an addictive personality and struggled with sobriety in my life but once I found the routine and discipline that nothing is worth more than my control I saw success start to come in many forms….personally, in relationships, and in financial freedom. It’s odd how you can change your perspective to focus on routine, consistency in routine, and discipline and it will overtake many things in your day to day….week to week…..month to month. I know that sometimes it’s “easier” to not do it every day…..I know it’s “easier” to decide to not plan it out…..I know it’s “easier” to go with the flow and see how things work out……but the “easiest” way does not mean success…..success requires work and once you are consistent in your work (whatever it may be) then you will start to see success compound.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I own companies, properties, and invest in aspects that are focused on the outdoor lifestyle – Moccasin Fly Club is a fishing and hunting concierge service that books trips, destinations, and guides from Alaska to Argentina. Hook & Hunt is a series of properties for short term rentals in Colorado and New Mexico for outdoor enthusiasts. I invest in products that are made for outdoor activities – fly fishing, hunting, backpacking. Overall, I have found I’m happiest in the outdoors and I know many Americans strive to get outside for activities throughout the year no matter where they live.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My best friends usually want to head to our Hook & Hunt location in Silt, CO to float the Colorado River, hike in the mountains, and enjoy the western slope. For me, personally, I’m happy with any mountain and water within drive distance for a day trip or camping for a long weekend. Eat at local places along the way, check out the “sights” in the local towns, hang out around a camp fire and catch up on stories. The best vacations are those that create memories, traditions, and experiences for your, friends, and family.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Mentors have helped shape my journey since I was in high school. Coaches helped me to get college to play lacrosse. Mentors throughout college taught me things about business and work ethic that helped me build my journey. Bosses and family helped me navigate throughout my time in Baltimore, San Diego, Aspen, and so on. In my career as a business owner, investor, and mentor to others….I now seek more knowledge on how to better my portfolio but how that increases the life of those that work with and around me. Find people that are doing what you love and learn from them….find mentors that can teach you about the next stages and learn from them…..always remain a student no matter how far you’ve come. I’d like to thank all the people that helped me along the way.
