We had the good fortune of connecting with Jon Bross and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jon, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We saw a niche that needed to be filled in Southern Colorado. We live in a community rich with meeting & event venues, unprecedented economic growth and increasing tourism. In 2003, we felt the arts, entertainment and specifically bluegrass music were underserved in Southern Colorado. We began a bluegrass ensemble that simply caters to the needs or our clients. Whether it be riding a snowcat with our instruments to a high-mountain ski lodge or curating a show for a specific audience; we created a sustainable band that creates memorable experiences for guests and repeat business for a variety of partners serving Colorado’s hospitality & tourism industries.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a Media Director for an advertising agency. We specialize in brand and performance-based marketing efforts that drive business for our clients. Advertising is an art and a science. It requires a lot data, strategy, and blend of message and medium. Our media environment is constantly evolving; in our content, devices or distribution channels. In our business, the push is always on to keep up with technology and our shifting media consumption habits. Personally however, I’ve always been enamored by the power of media and music since my childhood. Singer and songwriter, Barry Manilow, was behind an array of successful advertising jingles in our recent history including State Farm insurance, Band-Aid, KFC, Dr. Pepper and McDonald’s. Some of that classic advertising is entertaining, simple, and truly helped to shape some powerful brands. It’s fun to have an opportunity to keep that spirit alive in my work, as well as personally in the music we create.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I enjoy the high country and if we’ve got a week to burn… I might suggest a trip down to Durango where we’d ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge and jump off at Needleton. From there, we’d enter the Chicago Basin and find the summits of Sunlight, Eolus and Windom peaks. The Weminuche Wilderness is beautiful, abundant with wildlife and when you catch the ride out on the train, the bar car is worth the wait.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Like many musical groups, we’re a result of our influences. Our band, Grass It Up, enjoys paying a repertoire bluegrass, classic rock, country, and pop along with our (6) original recordings that more uniquely represent our style. Joined by David Jeffrey (writer/vocals/mandolin), Shannon Carr (vocals/guitar) and David Siegel (fiddle), we write and arrange music that we simply enjoy playing. Our families and friends certainly provide inspiration, and meeting planners, savvy audio techs and fun audiences really help to create great events.
