We had the good fortune of connecting with Jonathan Foster and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jonathan, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
I am very much inspired by global ideas, other artist’s work, and our natural environment. When I am inspired, I feel that I can be the most inspiring when sharing my work with others.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a singer-songwriter and performing-recording artist. What sets me a little bit apart from many others and what I am most proud of is that I’ve been recording albums and doing cross-country touring for a decade as a self-funded independent musician. I am very excited to announce and share my new songs and work coming out this year, including a live album that was recorded this past fall and a batch of new songs that I will be first rolling out as singles. Basically, how I got to this point was never stopping and continually moving forward towards short and long term goals. My body of work is really just longevity, but it’s also now a source of greater value from an artistry and content perspective compared to when I set out on my music career. Nothing is ever easy, but truly when you get to sing for a living, it’s a pretty sweet feeling. A lesson learned along the way is identifying when to listen and know when to shift in a new direction. My offering to the world is though song. Whether online, in media, or in person when there is music present, I believe we are creating a better world and richer communities.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my best friend to the Denver Art Museum, a Rockies and Avalanche game, the Denver Botanical Gardens, fishing on Boulder Creek, pre-cocktails and dinner at Golden Moon Speakeasy and then a show at Red Rocks and on the other nights see local and touring acts play on as many of the amazing small stage options around the city like Enigma Bazaar and Lion’s Liar. We would also eat at as many places as humanly possible since there are so many must-taste offerings like Washington Park Grille and my favorite Taco Tequila Whiskey. Lastly, we must do a brewery tour including Woods Boss Brewing Company and Dry Dock Brewing. It would be quite a week, now seeking investors!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to songwriter and storyteller Todd Snider who I have been listening to for 28 years. I have watched Todd forever wiggle through the ever-changing maze of the American music industry and maintain an authentic grassroots level of presentation. This has always been a source of great inspiration and entertainment and at times keeps me going on down the road. I appreciate artists that hold true to their talents and don’t change based on social norms or demands. In more recent years (the past decade), I can say the same for singer-songwriter James McMurtry, who along with Todd, uses his gifts and platforms to bring attention to issues that are not in the mainstream entertainment spotlight through songs and stories. While I am not necessarily like these two artists in all respects, I always carry them with me, knowing they have played a lot of the same small venues and helped maintain an industry outside the conventional for artists that don’t fall into a popular modern mold.
