We had the good fortune of connecting with Jordan Jensen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jordan, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
From an early age, I found myself naturally stepping into leadership roles—especially in group settings where I often carried the bulk of the responsibility. It wasn’t just about getting the work done; it was about ensuring it was done well. I realized early on that I had high standards and a strong work ethic, which sometimes clashed with others’ approaches. As I grew older, I came to understand that I thrive in environments where I can take initiative and maintain creative and professional control.

That mindset followed me into my career as a hairstylist. I worked in a number of salons where the structure was rigid, and there was little room for individual expression or autonomy. That didn’t align with who I am. I knew I needed to carve out a space that allowed me to create freely, work with integrity, and lead on my own terms.

Opening Obsidian Salon was the culmination of that journey. It was a challenging and deeply intentional process, but one that empowered me to fully take ownership of my craft, my career, and my future. It’s been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career in cosmetology has been anything but linear, and I think that’s what makes my story—and my brand—unique. I didn’t start out wanting to be a hairstylist. In fact, I was on the path to becoming a dentist. But when the pandemic disrupted everything, it also gave me the space to reflect on what I really wanted. With the encouragement of my amazing mother-in-law, I made the bold decision to follow my passion for hair and makeup. That leap of faith changed my life. I enrolled at Paul Mitchell, and the rest is history.

What sets me apart is that I don’t just do hair—I create a space for people to feel seen, heard, and celebrated. At Obsidian Salon, my goal is to provide more than just a service. It’s about building genuine connections, honoring each client’s individuality, and creating an experience that leaves them feeling empowered. I’m extremely hands-on and detail-oriented, and I believe that’s reflected in every cut, color, and conversation.

Getting to where I am now wasn’t easy. There were long days, sleepless nights, self-doubt, financial stress, and the pressure of building something from the ground up. But every obstacle taught me something valuable: to trust myself, to lean on the people who love me, and to never settle for less than what I know I’m capable of.

I’m most proud of the fact that I took control of my own story. I went from working under people who didn’t believe in my vision to opening my own salon where I can bring that vision to life every single day.

If there’s one thing I want the world to know about me and Obsidian Salon, it’s that this isn’t just a business—it’s a labor of love. It’s built on grit, gratitude, and the desire to help people look and feel their best, inside and out. I hope my story encourages others to trust their instincts, embrace the unexpected, and create the life they truly want.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One of my favorite spots in Colorado isn’t actually in the city—it’s a bit of a drive, but so worth it. Estes Park has completely stolen my heart. I spent my five-year wedding anniversary there and followed it up with a camping trip that same year, and honestly, it felt like heaven on earth. It reminds me so much of the small mountain town I used to visit from where I’m originally from—it’s cozy, full of charm, and has this quiet kind of magic. But you have to do the ghost tour at the Stanley. Just maybe don’t visit in the dead of winter!

I also recently visited Garden of the Gods, and it completely took my breath away. If you love hiking but don’t want to tackle a fourteener, it’s the perfect spot—stunning views, rich history, and very accessible.

If I had a friend visiting from out of town, I’d definitely show them a little of everything. I’d start with dinner at Nonna’s Italian Bistro in Centennial. It’s a small, beautifully run restaurant with incredible food, live music, and the most welcoming atmosphere. We’ve celebrated birthdays and date nights there, and it’s always perfect. And then there’s Nonna herself—she walks around checking on guests, radiating love and kindness. She’s a gem.

To round out the experience, we’d catch a show at the Buell Theater and do some shopping along 16th Street Mall. It’s the perfect mix of city energy and local charm.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The journey to where I am today has been anything but solitary. I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have a strong, supportive circle around me every step of the way. First and foremost, my husband, Cole, has been my rock. Not only did he support my decision to change careers and pursue my passion, but he’s also my business partner. He’s been the calm in the chaos, the person I’ve leaned on through every high and low—personally and professionally. I truly couldn’t have done this without him.

But the person who truly set this entire journey into motion is my amazing mother-in-law, Janene. Before cosmetology, I actually wanted to become a dentist. When the pandemic hit and the dental office I worked at closed, I confided in her about wanting to continue on that path. What I didn’t know was that she had already been thinking about my future in a different light. She had this gut feeling that cosmetology was the direction I was meant to take—because she knew how much I loved hair and makeup. Even though it went against her instinct to guide me too directly, she encouraged me to consider it. Within a week, I was enrolled at Paul Mitchell, and everything changed.

I also owe a huge thank you to my father-in-law and mother-in-law for opening their home to us during the pandemic so I could focus on school. My own parents have been cheering me on from afar—they even sent me my first pair of professional shears. My brother-in-law, who was going through his freshman year in lockdown, sat through many of my online classes with me and probably knows just as much as I do! And of course, I’m endlessly grateful for every friend and family member who let me practice on them, who believed in me, spread the word, and helped build the foundation for what would become Obsidian Salon.

I’m overwhelmed with gratitude for each and every one of you. Thank you for helping me chase this dream. I love you all more than words can say.
