Meet Josiah McCauley | Solution finder

We had the good fortune of connecting with Josiah McCauley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josiah, what habits do you feel helped you succeed?
People do the same thing over and over again but expect different results. For things to change for me, I had to change. That meant removing myself from anything that didn’t help me move forward in my goals. I stopped going out on weekends with friends. I worked 100 hours a week, slept 49 hours a week which gave me 19 hours a week to eat, workout and read. This gave me a huge advantage against my competition to succeed. I surrounded myself with other business minded individuals that also had big goals. It’s true you are the average of the 5 people you spend time with.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve been in business for a decade now. Everyone that owns a business would say there’s a lot of adversity a long the way. These challenges you go through is what sets you apart from everyone else. The ability to deal with problems and keep moving forward no matter what happens. An obsession really to achieve what you set your mind to and not giving up. You can only lose if you quit. I was going to college for my business degree as 21 years old and I asked my business professor. “What businesses have you owned?” He replied “I’ve never owned a business.” This immediately made me angry that I was learning how to run a business from someone that has never done it themselves. I did not sign up a second semester. I then googled what’s a low start up cost business with a high demand in my area. I found Landscaping was one of them and I felt pretty competent I could be good at that. I then applied at a landscape company and became the top salesmen/Supervisor in the company within 6 months. I continued working there for the next 2 years saving money until I had enough to start my own company. I started my company March 2013. One of the most important things I’ve learned in this business is creating a culture where people are happy to go to work. They look forward to working here and they are respected. Pay them better than the competition and take a big interest in the ones that also care about you and the company. Solve their problems and yours will go away. Then learn to delegate. I use to wear all the hats in the business. Hire people to do the the work that takes up most of your time. This allowed me to grow into a multimillion dollar company.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Colorado is one of the most beautiful places in the world. When my friends visit depending on the season like in the winter, We always plan a snowboard trip at a cabin in the mountains. If it’s summer, we can still do downhill mountain biking at Keystone or we jump on a wakeboard boat for some surfing. For dinner we head to Denver where’s there’s plenty of food options.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I came from a regular family that was told to go to school, get good grades so you can go to college and get a good job. Well, that worked during our parents time when a Salary was $30,000 & a house was $75,000. Now, GDP per capita is around $60,000 and the average house in $550,000. That kind of mindset does not get you ahead in todays world. If you work harder on yourself than you do on your business then eventually your business will follow. You must get around people that are going after their dreams. It helps to go to seminars to first be around the right people. Read the right books and become an attractive person and things will start to change for you. Think & Grow Rich is a great book to start with. How to Win Friends & Influence People is another must read
