We had the good fortune of connecting with Josiah & Meg Mothershed and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Josiah & Meg, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
Startup culture tells us we need to grow big and grow fast. However, the number one decision that contributed to our success is choosing to stay small. Small-scale businesses can be more adaptable, preserve their autonomy, maintain a lower overhead, and have greater potential for profit. We believe that the pressure to grow is a struggle many small business owners face, and one that is not talked about enough. There are countless seminars, articles, videos, and podcasts about scaling your team, and achieving and maintaining rapid growth. However, there’s often very little discussed about it being acceptable, or even encouraged to stay at a small size. With so much pressure to become a large-sized business or hire an extensive team to be considered successful, business owners can often feel like they’re not good enough. We’ve spoken with other business owners who feel the same, and others who describe rapid growth as the only way to achieve recognition and success. There’s enough pressure, stress, and imposter syndrome that entrepreneurs face without adding any additional strain to grow. In our four years in business as a boutique branding and web design studio, we have experienced just how much a small business can truly accomplish working as a team of two from a home office. We’ve expanded to an international client base and have continued to grow our yearly sales, all while maintaining the freedom of entrepreneurship and a relentless passion for our field.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We’re Mothershed Design Company, a boutique branding and web design studio based near Denver, Colorado. Owned and operated by Josiah & Meg Mothershed, we’re a husband-wife team that’s passionate about helping small businesses succeed. While helping businesses build great brands is our passion, it’s how you do it that matters! We believe in honesty and treating our clients like our friends. We don’t upsell or convince. We’ll tell you what you need and what you don’t. That’s why we use transparent, flat-fee packages: to ensure you feel confident that you’re getting exactly what you need to reach your goals. We do what we say we’ll do. While this isn’t a crazy concept, it IS crazy that it’s hard to find service-providers that are truly reliable. You can count on us to always hit deadlines and maintain consistent communication with you. Project management is our middle name! No snooty or pretentious attitudes here. We’re small business owners just like you. We want to help you achieve your goals while growing your business. Building your brand should be a joyful experience! Let’s share a few jokes (and a beer), along the way!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
As longtime Denverites, we love all that the city has to offer! One of our favorite RiNo spots is Sushi-Rama. Complete with a conveyor belt and colorful, moving plates, this restaurant is the perfect place to grab a quick bite. After your meal, check out Denver Sake Co. for a cold glass of sake to complete the experience. Sushi and sake not your thing? Head over to our old neighborhood, Capitol Hill for amazing wine at Carboy and an evening walk to Cheesman Park.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We’d like to give a shout out to each other! Working as a husband-wife team isn’t always easy, but it’s completely worth it. It can be challenging to work as a team in all aspects of our lives: in business, in marriage, and in life in general. However, we’ve learned that the key to a successful relationship is communication (and lots of it). There’s no better support system than your spouse, and being able to build something amazing together and provide for ourselves is such a valuable opportunity. No matter what the future holds, we know we’re stronger together.
