We had the good fortune of connecting with Joslynn Peterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Joslynn, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am a first-generation American Hispanic woman who grew up with my grandma speaking Spanish to me and me responding in English. She walked me to school every day. She learned English with me. My single mom worked every day and always gave it her all, she is still working and giving it her all today. I grew up being around these women. Seeing them work hard day in and day out, I wanted to be like them.
When I started working on my own, I knew I wanted to work for myself. I loved interacting with people so that was also something I took into account. I was obsessed with fitness. So that had to be a part of it too.
I was brought up doing sports, learning work ethic, and learning that I was definitely not the “best” one out there. I was a small fish in a big sea.
So I like to take that into account with my business. It impacts me every day,I know that there will always be more to be learned and more to be done. I just have to keep my work ethic and be passionate.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I would say that what sets me apart from other coaches is my personality and life experience. There are many coaches out there, it can be overwhelming to try and pick information that is best for you, especially when it comes to training. To be honest, some personalities don’t mesh. AND THAT IS OKAY!
Coaches and athletes don’t always get along, that’s normal. When you get to choose your own coach it is okay to try different coaches. In fact, I think that is healthy and important to figure out what you like!
I am a runner, climber, surfer, Hispanic woman, outdoor enthusiast. I work with the seasonal athlete because we need to juggle all the sports we love! I also work with Prevention, pre, and post-cancer and I always will bring psych!
I have learned throughout the years that everyone that comes into my life will leave a small imprint and we will both learn from each other. It is so beautiful. I am always excited to work with new clients!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend came into town being the person that I am, I would probably design a whole itinerary around our outdoor activities. So we would (depending on the friend’s fitness level) go for a hike, run or climb. Get some coffee, eat, maybe get another coffee and eat again!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a shout-out to my husband Galen Peterson, he has always believed in me. He is the reason I have grown more confident in my work. He has allowed me to blossom in every aspect. Sometimes you just need a little nudge from a loved one and then you will take off! Just remember to listen to loved ones when they are encouraging you when they believe in you and respect you.
