We had the good fortune of connecting with Julia Misawa and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julia, how does your business help the community?
At Boulder Taiko, Japanese drumming team, our mission extends beyond music and performance; we’re dedicated to fostering a sense of unity and harmony within our community. Through our performances and workshops held at our dojo, local schools, businesses, and various events, we strive to create connections and promote cultural appreciation.
Our approach to taiko goes beyond just playing drums; it’s about embodying values of respect, gratitude, and inclusivity. The taiko drum itself serves as a powerful symbol of community unity; its round shape, unbroken and continuous, reflects the interconnectedness of people. Just as each hand joining together forms a circle, our interactions and collaborations within the community create a cohesive whole.
By engaging with people of all backgrounds and ages, gender, we aim to expand our community while celebrating diversity and promoting understanding.
I’m excited to delve deeper into how Boulder Taiko is making a difference in the community during the interview.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is deeply intertwined with my identity and creative expression as a taiko artist, producer, instructor, graphic designer, and video editor. Through Boulder Taiko, I’ve had the privilege of sharing the vibrant and powerful tradition of taiko drumming with communities far and wide.
What sets me apart from others is not just my technical skill or artistic vision, but perhaps my unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries and creating transformative experiences. One of the moments I’m most proud of is spearheading the Colorado Taiko Summit 2017 (CTS2017) at Macky Auditorium, where we brought together taiko groups from Japan, Hawaii, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Colorado for a five-day event. Despite facing unexpected challenges and falling short of our audience target, I’m proud that we persevered through adversity, even when it meant grappling with significant financial debt.
Through meticulous planning and a five-year commitment, I was able to successfully navigate the challenges and return the debts. This experience taught me invaluable lessons about the importance of balancing passion with practicality, and the necessity of strategic planning for large-scale events.
My journey to where I am today has been far from easy. It’s been marked by moments of doubt, setbacks, and uncertainty. However, each challenge has served as an opportunity for growth and learning. I’ve learned the importance of resilience, adaptability, and seeking support from those around me.
As I continue to pursue my passion for taiko and creative expression, I want the world to know that my story is one of perseverance, resilience, and unwavering dedication to my craft. While I may have faced setbacks along the way, I’ve never wavered in my belief that anything is possible with determination and a willingness to listen to both my heart and the wisdom of those around me.
Moving forward, I’m excited to continue pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of taiko and creative expression, guided by the lessons I’ve learned and the support of my community.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If one of my best friends was visiting, who enjoys the tranquility of nature and relaxation, I would take them on a unique mountain getaway experience. We’d head to a luxury camping resort nestled in the heart of the Rockies for a week-long retreat. This resort offers comfortable tent-like accommodations equipped with cozy beds, sofas, and all the amenities needed for a luxurious stay.
During the day, we’d explore the stunning natural surroundings with hikes through picturesque trails, guided nature walks, and perhaps even a scenic horseback ride. We’d spend afternoons lounging by the campfire, enjoying breathtaking mountain views, and indulging in gourmet meals prepared by the resort’s talented chefs.
In the evenings, we’d unwind with craft cocktails at the onsite bar or enjoy live music under the starry sky. For a bit of adventure, we might sign up for a Taichi or yoga class or participate in a cooking workshop to learn some new culinary skills.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I’d like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has been a part of my life journey so far. From family members who have supported me from the beginning to friends who have cheered me on every step of the way, each person has played a unique and significant role in shaping who I am today.
I’d like to offer a special thank you to my husband, who has been my rock and constant source of support throughout my journey with Boulder Taiko. His unwavering belief in me, coupled with his endless encouragement and understanding, have been the cornerstone of my success.
Through the highs and lows, my husband has stood by my side, offering not only his love and encouragement but also his practical support and guidance. His belief in my dreams and his willingness to share in the joys and challenges of pursuing them have been invaluable to me.
To my dear husband, thank him for being my biggest cheerleader and for always believing in me, even when I doubted myself. His love and support mean more to me than words can express, and I’m grateful every day to have him by my side
I’m grateful for my taiko teacher, grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka and mentors who have shared their knowledge and wisdom with me, guiding me through challenges and helping me grow both personally and professionally. Their encouragement and belief in my abilities have been instrumental in my success.
I also want to thank the Boulder Taiko community for welcoming me with open arms and providing a space where I can share my passion for taiko drumming. Their camaraderie and support have been a constant source of inspiration and motivation.
To all the collaborators, supporters, and well-wishers who have crossed my path, thank you for your kindness, encouragement, and belief in my potential. Your presence in my life has made all the difference, and I’m deeply grateful for each and every one of you.
