We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabena Carter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabena, every day, we talk about how much execution matters, but we think ideas also matter. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
It was the summer of 2021 and I was gathering ideas to celebrate our 2nd wedding anniversary. While browsing Pinterest one evening, I stumbled across these beachfront luxury picnics on the United States coasts and thought, “That would be a cute idea to surprise Isaac!” When going into a few local thrift stores for supplies, my entrepreneurial gears started turning for this to turn into a business opportunity. After our first luxury picnic in Sioux Falls on the evening of our second anniversary, we hit the ground running with an overwhelming response to this new type of local experience.
What should our readers know about your business?
QBIC Luxury Picnics is owned by myself, Sabena Carter (QB/Queen Bean – Isaac’s nickname for me), and Isaac Carter (IC). We are a husband and wife duo specializing in creating extravagant luxury picnics, dinner party experiences, and vintage-inspired rentals. When we see the excitement on our clients’ faces at their chosen picnic location, it brings us great joy. We have faced and overcome many challenges by tackling them one at a time and have learned that word of mouth is the most important type of advertising for our business. We understand that everyone talks and the first impression has the biggest impact on our brand and us as individuals. Owning a small business and trying to find balance can be challenging, but we believe it’s worth it to fight and create something to call our own rather than working a 9-5 making money for someone else. We aim to create memories one picnic at a time within the community, reminding locals to slow down and savor the moment.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
– Fine dining supper experience at Morrie’s Steakhouse
– Take in the views of Falls Park and pack a picnic lunch
– Drinks downtown at Crawfords and support the local shops
– Cooking class at Sioux Falls Chef
– Flow and Paddle (pedal boat or kayak experience) on Lake Lorraine
– Visit the State Theater downtown and recline in their extra comfy seats to escape the heat of a hot summer day
– Wander the local vineyards of Wilde Prairie Winery in Brandon, SD after a wine-tasting to narrow down your favorites
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Isaac Carter – Without you, there would be no “QBIC”. You’re my better half and the best business/life partner a girl could ask for!
