We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Justin, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
Coming from an athletic background and competing in sports up until and through college, I always knew sports would follow me even after I was the player. The idea for Lightning Factory started during my first year of being a teacher all the way in Idaho. I had a few amazing student athletes that were super dedicated to getting faster and running track, but it was not track season yet, and because there was no club track teams or training facilities within 30 minutes, we decided to start our own program from scratch. Most of those kids went on to compete and medal in the state meet, and with this feeling of success, I decided to continue Lightning Factory when I moved Colorado even though I would start with 0 athletes.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am the owner and head coach of Lightning Factory Track Club. We are a non-profit organization based out of Commerce City that provides competitive track and field opportunities for the athletes in the area. I am most proud of making club sports accessible to those who may not able to bear the steep financial barrier of entry. Lightning Factory offers scholarships and many other ways that athletes can lessen or expel the financial burden that usually comes with club sports.

I am most excited about expanding the Lightning Factory community and participating in more city events. In such a short time we were able to build a close knit community that feels like a family.

Though it wasn’t easy and took many sleepless nights, it was made easy through the community we have fostered. The biggest lesson I learned throughout the growth of Lightning Factory is that any challenge can be overcome when attacking it as a team.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Because I’m a foodie, any friend of mine that were to visit would have to hit my favorite food spots. We’d start the day off with brunch at Snooze for great food and mimosas, then once that was settled we’d grab a slice of pizza from Anthony’s II in Thornton. Lastly we’d end the night at El Five in downtown for a great mixture of familiar and unique flavors.

Colorado has tons of stunning views and wildlife to see, however as a newcomer to the state, and a busy coach, I have yet to explore the nature side of Colorado.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to all the athletes I have ever coached. Though I am the coach, I often do the most learning. With every conversation, every rep, and every season I become better and more efficient thanks to their effort and feedback. Not only have they taught me how to be a better coach, but a better person. My athletes are thoughtful, down-to-earth kids that make me want to be the best person I can be for them. I want to also shoutout my wife, who deals with all the time I spend away from her and on the track, I would absolutely not have had the courage to start my own business without her.
