We had the good fortune of connecting with Emcee Speakeasy and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emcee, what do you attribute your success to?
Consistency. Wether it’s writing any chance I get, or getting behind a microphone every week to track songs, proud of them or not, it all results in baby steps closer to fulfilling the dream. I’ve taken weeks off of music, and it never feels right. My #SpitfireSaturdays series on social media helped me realize, any creation is good creation, and having the talent or skill to rap is just like being an athlete. We still have to train, prepare, both mentally and physically. It’s a muscle that you have to work out, being an artist, and I truly think if you don’t stay consistent in your craft, you can lose that muscle, and the drive and motivation will decay along with it. Looking at my passion as a job, with a set schedule, clocking in and out and dedicating the time, has really helped me stay consistent. Not looking at it as a huge mountain to climb, but more of a river and each paddle cuts through getting closer to reaching the end goal.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Every white kid wants to be a rapper (or so I believe) so from the beginning I had to figure out my purpose. Why was I chasing this? What makes me different? I choose to be completely authentic in every song I put together, and take a different path from most Hip-Hop Artists today. I don’t need the gold chains or women or money, that’s all overrated. I rap about skateboarding and video games, things that affect me and things I hold near and dear to my heart. I’ve always taken pride in being my truest self when behind a microphone, and I’ll continue to keep it that way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First off, we’re hittin’ the Rio for steak quesadillas and their famous Rio Margs. Maybe heading down to Lee Martinez Park to shoot some hoops, before rounding out the night at Northside skatepark, where I spent most of my teenage years. I love spending nights cruising up and down College, through the beautiful Old Town lights. Pinball Jones, and Walrus Ice-Cream, are on top of my list of must-sees, especially for that Jack Chip, and no one can go wrong checking out a local band at the Aggie or Artery. I love the vibe of Fort Collins and no Summer night is better spent with friends hitting up the town.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wonderful wife Danae. She’s been by my side through this entire journey and witnessed the ups and downs of my entire young career. Also, my amazing producer and partner in rhyme, Evan Hamilton, a.k.a Melochroma. I also credit my whole family for instilling such a love of music in me, from a young age. Thanks for your support!
