We had the good fortune of connecting with Karen Anderson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karen, what role has risk played in your life or career?
With risk comes a lot of uncertainty. When I first got my real estate license it was the end of 2007 and right before the housing market crash. To pay bills, I worked as a bartender and then in real estate marketing while keeping a sole proprietorship on the side for real estate. Fast forward to 2015, I still knew real estate was where my heart was and what I wanted to do full-time but was nervous to take the risk of not having a steady income. I took the plunge anyway and am blessed to say I haven’t looked back. Without having taken the risk and embraced the unknown, I would not have realized I could fulfill my goals and be a part of something I love, while calling it my career at the same time.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I really love my career in real estate because I get to work with so many different people and establish long lasting relationships with my clients, many who have become my close friends. Every day is different and every client’s purchase is unique and I love the diversity. Whether I’m helping a client buy their first home or working to help build a client’s investment portfolio, I love every step of the process. I also often work with builders and developers and to get to see their vision come into fruition is an amazing thing to be a part of. My success comes from the trust of my clients in helping them achieve their real estate goals. Establishing a career in real estate isn’t easy, it takes a lot of time and effort but I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I like to brag that I am a rare Colorado Native and can offer insight on must see local destinations. If I had friends or family in town for a long weekend, I would take them hiking or trail running at Matthew Winter’s Park and the Dinosaur Ridge loop near Red Rocks and follow that up with brunch in downtown Golden. Later that night, walk around S Pearl Street and stop for dinner at Izakaya Den. The following day we could check out Union Station and grab a bloody mary at Mercantile, head up to Boulder for a CU Buffs football game and have dinner on The St Julien Hotel’s patio while listening to live music and people watching. We would sleep in on Sunday and walk around Wash Park before ending our weekend with brunch at Breakfast on Broadway in Englewood.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandpa owned and managed rental properties and my mom has always worked in real estate. I went to school for broadcast journalism and growing up, that is what I always thought I wanted to do. After college and applying to tiny towns all over the country, I knew my heart wasn’t in it. My mom suggested I get my real estate license and I am so thankful I did. Watching my mom in real estate has driven me to be where I am today and I still call her for advice or when I just need someone to talk to who understands the business. I would also like to recognize Larina McClain, who is not only one of my best friends but someone I look up to as a model Realtor. She is inspiring and fun, and has built her very successful business from the ground up, while always taking time to help fellow agents and head up our office with the equally as inspiring Dawn Tieken.
