We had the good fortune of connecting with Kat Tepylo Murphy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kat, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
I don’t really believe in the word “balance” because I know I will never really achieve a perfect, even split between life and work. I like to think of it as a flow. Sometimes my life will flow more to the life side and sometimes will flow more to the work side, and that’s okay.

I have two small kids ages 4 and 1 so life is at a very chaotic stage. Sometimes the weight of both life and work feels overwhelming. So I try to take it day by day and figure out what my focus is for that time period. Sometimes I am working late and other times I’m taking the day off to go on a field trip with my daughter.

Not balance, but flow.

Before I had kids I would devote so much of who I am into my work and my business. But I quickly realized it wasn’t sustainable. I need to be my own unique person outside of my work.

I’m working on rediscovering who I am outside of being a business owner and mom. I’m trying art classes and prioritizing spending time with friends.

What should our readers know about your business?
Social Kat Media is a social media agency that is committed to making social media not just tolerable but fun and effective for community-focused businesses. We take business’ stress out of connecting with their community (Online & IRL)—So they can reclaim their time, feel more confident about their content, & grow their business.

I’m passionate about building sustainable, low-stress relationships with social media for the businesses we support. We’re not pushing “grow hacks” or overwhelming post schedules. Instead, we focus on strategic and sustainable content, that allows business owners to inject their humanity in their content.

This focus on realistic and sustainable social media has allowed us to build out our niche as we set ourselves apart from the “you must always be doing more” culture that exists online.

I’ve learned that it is vitally important for me to stay true to who I am. Through our business socials I have candid conversations about mental health, the highs and lows of parenthood, and the struggles of being a business owner. This honesty and realness has allowed me to build deep, meaningful connections with our community.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

I want to dedicate this shoutout to Lesley of Swell Made Co. She has been a constant inspiration in my business life over the last few years. She has encouraged me and supported me.

She has also inspired me with her pursuit of what is good in life — she went back to school to study sustainability and is focusing her work on helping entrepreneurs and business owners do good in the world.
