We had the good fortune of connecting with Kattie Laur and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kattie, can you talk to us a bit about the social impact of your business?
Podcasting is such a unique space where people from all over the world can get the ultimate experience in empathy without even realizing it. Through my work as a freelance podcast producer, I’m working on building a roster of podcasts help people understand their place our world through humour, ernest conversations and hot takes that spark a conversation.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m really excited to my career changing over time. When I first started out, I did everything I possibly could in podcasting for anyone. Now, I’m more selective about who I work with and what kind of work I do. There’s a lot of imposter syndrome that hit me along the way, but I’m more certain than ever that I do really good work when it’s something I truly believe in. My work in podcasting focuses on content that creates a better, more equitable world. You’ll see this in my shows like Alpaca My Bags (the responsible travel podcast), Building Good (the equitable construstion podcast) and the Betakit Podcast (the Canadian tech ecosystem podcast). In developing podcasts under that umbrella of social responsibility, I noticed that the Canadian podcasting ecosystem itself could use an improvement in equity too, and that’s what lead me to my next endeavour: my podcast newsletter, Pod the North. I’m on a mission to use podcasts for good and create an industry that’s fair for everyone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love everything winter as to bring, and skiing in Colorado is gorgeous! Book a nights stay at a cute BnB like Capitol Hill Mansion Bed & Breakfast Inn (which includes a hot tub!), and plan a day trip to any of the amazing ski resorts nearby. Wrap up your day with apres-ski beers at Cerebral Brewing!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My shoutout is to Jim Beqaj – my first freelance client! Jim is a career coach and trusted advisor that I met sort of scerendipidously. Helping him develop his podcast, Be You: The World Will Adjust, was sort of unintentially instrumental in my career transition. Working with Jim helped me to build the freelance career that I’ve dreamed of and understand the ebs and flows of it all. I can’t thank Jim enough for teaching me about setting healthy boundaries with clients, and helping me understand where my passions lie and what makes me happy at the end of the day. I recommend anyone who is unhappy in their career or professional life to talk to him, or listen to his podcast!
