We had the good fortune of connecting with Kaylie Haynes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kaylie, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
As someone who is always chasing new goals and has a lot of things going on at once, I’ve needed to learn to intentionally manage my work-life balance because there’s never a shortage of things to do. I have learned to look at rest and self-care as a vital part of the creative process instead of something that gets in the way of it. My energy levels tend to ebb and flow – some days I can work for 14 hours straight and not get tired; other days it’s a struggle just to complete basic tasks. I like to work with my natural tendencies rather than against them, and I’ve found that there’s a sweet spot that provides just enough structure and discipline to keep momentum going, while allowing the flexibility to rest or respond to important things that pop up.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m proud of how hard I’ve worked to nurture my creative spirit. My background is in the sciences and engineering, so it’s taken a lot of internal work to give my creative side permission to show, plus learning to use the tools to match the external result to my internal vision. It’s a rewarding but constant challenge to let go of perfectionism, celebrate the progress you’ve made, and dive out into the unknown to expand your horizons even more. I think it’s important to recognize how far you’ve come, stay focused on the present, and not compare yourself to others. If I knew it was going to be this difficult when I started, I probably would have gotten overwhelmed and never begun. But once I took the leap and started taking one step at a time to propel me toward my dreams, I can’t imagine life any other way. There is nothing more fulfilling than coming together with other creatives and watching a vision you’ve had materialize into reality.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Golden is a must-visit that has the feel of a mountain town but is close to Denver. I don’t think you can truly experience Colorado without seeing the mountains, and Beaver Brook trail is one of my favorite hikes that’s great for all experience levels. I’d also take them to the Golden Moon speakeasy for handcrafted cocktails in a unique atmosphere, a concert at Red Rocks, swing dancing at the Mercury Cafe, and a stroll through the Highlands area culminating in Little Man Ice cream.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Danielle Uhl has helped me a ton to manage my time, get clear on what I want, and believe in myself to go after it. She’s given me a ton of support and mentorship – and an inspiring example to look up to.

I also want to give a huge shout out to my bandmates. It’s really neat to see what happens when creative people bring their unique gifts together to make something that didn’t exist before, and having the support and accountability of others has really kept me going.
