We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelly Mc Coy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kelly, how does your business help the community?

Spirit & Flow came to fruition out of my love for crochet. It’s one of my practices for finding joy, calm, and peace in the world. You’ve probably heard of flow, that state you get in when you are wholly absorbed in something. Have you ever been doing something and completely lost all sense of self and time? That is flow. It reduces anxiety, boosts your mood, and even slows your heart rate.
I donate 5% of my proceeds to nonprofits that provide access and support equitable and inclusive mental health and wellness.   At a time in my life when I needed counseling, it wasn’t easy to find mental health services that were culturally relevant. For this reason, I specifically support organizations that support mental health wellness in the Black community. Here in the Seattle metro, I support the Washington Therapy Fund. In the community I grew up in, I support the BEAM Collective and nationally Mental Health America.
Another way Spirit& Flow supports the community is through sustainable and regenerative practices that support people and the planet, I work hard to ensure that nothing goes to waste.
These practices include:
-Sourcing yarns from local suppliers as much as possible.
-Only using climate beneficial materials like organic biodegradable yarns.
-Re-using and upcycling used materials, like upcycling scarves made from non-biodegradable yarns.
-Shipping with recycled packaging as much as possible.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

Well, crocheting is a creative outlet that brings me joy. I began receiving compliments on some of the scarves I was making and decided to take a risk and open an online store last fall. And it’s been a lot of fun!
The challenge lies in how to make fashion that is regenerative and sustainable. Responsible sourcing of materials, slow production time, and limiting the number of products and distribution are the key. Which to some may sound counterintuitive, but I believe it’s what is needed to have a more positive impact on people and the planet.
I produce a limited amount of new styles that are released a few times a year. Spring was just released; the next release will be this fall. Snuggly scarves, cowls, shawls, and other creature comforts to wrap yourself up in warmth.  My creations are handmade one at a time with the intention that each is unique. 100% Organic biodegradable and upcycled Spirit & Flow accessories are meant to be appreciated, worn, and maintained for a long time. And if you want something special, let’s collaborate! Custom designs are also available. Collaborating is fun,  I am excited to be working with another crocheter, on a special project that we are scheduled to release this fall!
I envision a world where more people can find compassion, hope, peace, and service by participating in experiences that give them joy and mental wellness. Spirit & Flow is a step on that journey.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?

Like Colorado, here in Washington, we are surrounded by the gifts of Mother Nature. So plan some time outside for sure and then some good eats! Here is what I would do with friends:
Let’s head out for our morning java at Boona Boona Coffee in Renton  then head down to Paradise on Mt. Rainier for a day hike and immersing in nature. We are going to be famished on the way down. So when we are back in the city, we will wrap up the day and hit one of my favorite eateries for drinks and dinner, like JuneBaby or Levitate Gastropub.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?

Ah, I love this! My inspiration has come from the shoulders upon which I stand, my parents and grandparents. Along with the great circle of family and friends who inspire me by simply being who they are. They inspire me with their honesty, the kick in the pants when needed, and for rooting me on wherever my journey takes me.
Special shout and thank you to fellow nature lover and creator Latasha Dunston, Creator of Jitterbug Art Studio in Denver. Latasha designed the logo for Spirit & Flow! Her work is incredible everyone should check her work out!
It’s so important to support and help lift others in all that we do. Collaboration over competition! I love being a bridge helping to connect people with others that may be a resource.
