Meet Kena Peterson | Website Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Kena Peterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kena, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My background is in journalism and public relations, and I spent several years working for a municipality as the communications coordinator. In that role, I handled everything from press relations and marketing materials to managing the website and community messaging. When I had my first two children, I realized I wanted the flexibility to be home with them while still doing the creative, community-focused work I loved. Starting my own business in website design allowed me to combine those skills—writing, design, and storytelling—while helping local businesses grow!

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business, Bright Ideas Website Design, helps small, local businesses look great online. I work with service-based professionals like therapists, real estate agents, salons, and local shops—people who love what they do but don’t always have time to figure out websites and marketing.
What makes me different is how personal I am with my clients. I really take the time to understand their business, their goals, and what makes them unique. I also make things easy to understand—no confusing tech talk, just clean, functional websites that actually help them grow.
I started Bright Ideas back in 2006 after working for a nonprofit doing journalism and public relations, and later as a communications coordinator for a municipality. When I had my first two kids, I wanted more flexibility and to be home with them, so I decided to take the leap and start my own business. It wasn’t always easy—there were a lot of late nights, learning moments, and trial and error—but it’s been so rewarding.
I’m proud that my business has grown mostly through referrals and my local networking group, BNI. I’ve learned that relationships really are everything. When you care about people and their success, good things happen. At the end of the day, I just want small business owners to know that web design doesn’t have to be stressful or complicated. I love helping people tell their story online and helping their business grow.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend came to visit for a week, I’d definitely make sure they got the full Colorado experience. We’d kick things off with a trip to Casa Bonita—because honestly, you can’t come to the Denver area and not experience that. It’s equal parts chaos and nostalgia, and the cliff divers and sopapillas make it worth it every time!
We’d spend a day paddle boarding at Chatfield Reservoir and then head to one of the local breweries afterward—maybe Lone Tree Brewing or Dry Dock Brewing—for a cold beer and possibly a trivia game.
The rest of the week would be a mix of exploring small mountain towns, checking out local restaurants, and enjoying the beautiful Colorado weather. We might take a trip up to Red Rocks or visit the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d give a big shoutout to my family, friends, and local community—they’ve been such a huge part of my journey. My family has always supported me and encouraged me to go after what I love. My friends have been there from the start, offering advice, cheering me on, and sometimes even being my first clients. And my BNI group deserves credit too—they’ve helped me grow, kept me accountable, and made business feel a lot more fun. I’m really grateful for all the people who’ve backed me up along the way.
