We had the good fortune of connecting with Kent Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kent, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The Thornton Community Band can attribute its success to the wide variety of people that play in the band as well as support the band from the community. Having over 85+ musicians of different backgrounds all coming together in a common goal to make music is a wonderful thing! We only continue to grow each year!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The Thornton Community Band as stated earlier has a wide variety of people that are all passionate about contributing to making music and ensuring the band continues forward to the next season. This passion can be seen all across our brand whether it is the people who set up/tear down the stage, to the music library staff, to the musicians themselves that play the shows. We are a huge, inclusive family that loves playing music for the community! We sometimes do have challenges that arise from time to time but these issues are dealt with in a fair process that will ensure the resolution of these problems so we can continue to move forward. Quite often these issues help with setting new policies and procedures that ensure everyone gets a fair shake.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Thursday night @ 7 pm – BAND PRACTICE – Come hear the band practice their current music literature set in preparation for the next show. Winterfest in December – A great holiday show performed at Carpenter Park in the City of Thornton. 4th of July – Our patriotic show (with REAL cannons!) that is performed at Carpenter Park in the City of Thornton. Normally we also have three major concerts spread throughout the year as well. These concerts are in an auditorium usually at a school of some sort. Mickey’s Top Sirloin – This has become the after practice/show hangout of the band where we all love to eat and discuss the music just performed as well as anything/everything else!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
