We had the good fortune of connecting with Kerry Siggins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kerry, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I take a healthy amount of risk in my life and career. I believe that the only way to get good at doing hard things is by doing hard things, and to live up to this mentality, one has to take risks. I’ve learned over the years that I expand my competency zone every time I get out of my comfort zone. One of the biggest risks I took in life was to move to Durango when I was 28 with no job. I knew in my heart it was where I belonged, and I trusted that I would figure it out when I got there. Two months after I moved, I began my job with StoneAge and here I am, almost 17 years later running this exceptional company, living my best life.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
At the age of 28, I began my journey of leading StoneAge. I quickly learned how to adjust my style to effectively lead smart people who knew a heck of a lot more than I did. Being a relatively young leader, especially for my role, I had a lot to learn — not only about the product and the industry — but also how to manage and motivate people. And managing and motivating people takes exceptional leadership and communication skills. Frankly, I screwed up a lot in my early days and still am learning from the mistakes I make today. I am passionate about employee ownership and the power of ownership thinking, which is about growth, self-awareness, accountability, improved communication skills, and owning everything that happens in life, even the bad stuff. By doing the hard work daily, I’ve been able to embody what I call The Ownership Mindset to transform my life and leadership. My biggest impact comes from serving others by helping them learn how to transform their lives and leadership by taking full responsibility for everything that happens in their lives.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Since I live in Durango, I’d first try to talk my friend into joining me there to ride mountain bikes. But if we were to spend the day in Denver, I’d suggest staying at the Four Seasons because they have the best bedding, having brunch at Jelly, heading to Boulder to hike the Flat Irons, and then hit up Coors Field to enjoy a Rockies game and hotdogs.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to John Wolgamott and Jerry Zink, the co-founders of StoneAge. Their goal was to build a great company creating rewarding jobs where employees felt like owners. Here we are, almost 45 years later, and our employees now own 100% of the company. Their generosity, vision, and commitment to StoneAge are remarkable, and I am proud to have built this company alongside of them. Thank you, John and Jerry, for the doors you’ve opened for all of us at StoneAge.
