We had the good fortune of connecting with Kevin Short and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kevin, why did you pursue a creative career?
I decided I wanted to play music when I was like 5. The first album I ever owned was beastie boys, license to ill. Brass Monkey and No Sleep Till Brooklyn just always made me feel some time of way lol. Maybe it was the bass from Brass Monkey, or the attitude from No Sleep Till Brooklyn. I would always catch myself tapping my fingers to beats as I got older, which progressed into hardcore air drumming haha. I started going to underground dance parties when I was 16/17. Ever since my first underground party I knew I wanted to be part of the scene/culture wether behind the scenes, or up on stage.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from others is my personality. My flavor. My taste in music. My ability to make people dance when they are all sitting down.
I can’t say that making a bunch of people dance instead of walking away to smoke, get a drink, or use the bathroom is super easy. It takes a proper selection, mixing skills, and a certain vibe to keep them in front of you, and even more so to bring them into the room or onto the dance floor. This past year with covid has shown us that more than ever, because we have to sit at tables right now in colorado.
A couple years ago, I was just messing around with my boys, learning to mix well on cdjs, hosting mix sessions in my basement. Ever since then, ive hosted several events, both live, and live stream, I’ve made onto stages all over the state, to different parts of the country, and even played a couple shows in Costa Rica. I would have never thought that today I’d already have played on the same line ups as Caspa, Mimosa, Yheti, Of The Trees, Resonant Language, and so many more super talented artists, to now be playing Direct support for The Widdler’s late night event at The Black Box April 17th with my good friend Evan aka Fathomless. Together we go by FatMidz. Beyond stoked to see where things go!!!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Oh dang.. hmmm. I’d say we have to go to sharetea for a Thai tea first.. then sit and enjoy some of Denver’s finest organic…herbs…out of a nice clean Roor, of course 😉 my fav place to eat here that’s realistic and not too fancy is texas de Brazil, so that would 100% be on the list. The d bar has some really good desserts too.
The Black Box is like my home away from home, so I would take any of my friends there to check it out. Cervantes is prob my next go to for dope line ups and good times.
U can’t visit Colorado from another place and not go cruise thru the mountains. There are some awesome places out here that are perfect for getting away from it all and seeing what life is really about. There are way too many places to name.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This goes out to my mom, who gave me this amazing life and is still the most supporting mother a person could ask for. To the people who have given me a chance and the promoters, organizers, and talent scouts who have put me on stage. To the producers who have laced me up with unreleased tunes. To Nicole and the whole crew over at The Black Box for being so supportive, and Bill Husted aka Colors As Sound for so many reasons. Love to u all
