We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristen Jordan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kristen, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
Being an entrepreneur, I always feel that I could be doing something for my business. In order to be successful some of that work ethic is most definitely needed. However, balance has always been a super important value for me in how I operate in business and life. If you ask my friends and family they probably would say that it really is true that I like to ‘work hard and play hard’. I had great role models for this growing up and therefore I have really implemented this in most seasons of my life. As the owner of a personal training and health coaching business I have learned more balance over time with trial and error. When I began training I was traveling to my clients all over Denver and spending a lot of time on the road. I learned that it was a lot harder to balance my career and grow it when I didn’t have a consistent schedule. Now, all my clients come to me in my home studio. I learned to set my specific schedule based on when worked best for me instead of taking clients at any waking hour.

Most recently, I have learned to juggle running my business and being a mom to a one year old. I am lucky in the career path that I chose that I am able to have my little one in the gym with me. I think its a ‘dream come true’ to have him climbing over everything and picking up equipment (safely) naturally on his own. A lot of my business can be done through the phone so I am aware of leaving it off or not having it with me when I am with my son. Overall, I think about balance as a life where your life purpose and life work are in alignment. I like to call this being ‘in flow’.

What should our readers know about your business?
My focus of my business is to help clients make holistic sustainable lifestyle change. My goal is that each person I work with is empowered not just in their workout, but in their life to make positive health changes. As a personal trainer with over ten years of experience in various settings of the industry, I now offer a holistic approach after seeing the more superficial side of the industry. There is so much confusion for my clients on what to eat, how to workout, when to do this or that. I approach my clients with guidance on following their intuitive natural movement patterns and food that fuels their body. I believe movement and food are medicine. It is not always easy to stick to non-fad or quick fix mentality in a highly saturated business. But it is worth it.

One of the impactful places I worked was a weight loss immersion camp for kids. One of the main 3 pillars along with exercise and nutrition was behavior change. This is where it started clicking for me that there is way more to our health journey than giving a client an amazing workout. I started listening to the Rich Roll podcast during this time which ultimately led me to research more about integrative health and nutrition. I am now a certified Integrative Nutrition Health Coach and love pairing the two of my expertise together as they go hand in hand.

Now as a new mom, I am now offering small group classes for moms and building a community centered on holistic health, mind body and spirit. I know how important this is for our mental health and healing from all our body changes. As my mission statement says “sweat is our currency, movement is magic, food is our medicine and nature is our playground”. I truly love what I do and making an impact whether small or big is my calling.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well of course I would first invite you over to my garage gym for a quick workout! I love Golden so I would start there with a walk by Clear Creek and then a beer at Golden City Brewery. Then to get the full Golden experience a quick mountain bike ride on Green Mountain and order a Bonfire Burrito to pick up on your way home. You cannot miss out on the bright fall colors of Aspens glowing and a drive through pretty much anywhere in the mountains is breathtaking. You need a hot coffee for the cool mornings and nights so I highly recommend Kaladi Coffee Roasters. I think they are the best in town, and a lot of the local coffee shops use their beans, (checkout Bardo coffee shop & Ground Up in Littleton) SushiDen did not disappoint but our local Littleton Iyawama Sushi blows all other local sushi’s out of the water. Now that I have a little one year old, Clement Park has a huge playground, trail around a lake and splashpad. I love being so close to Red Rocks for their trails and concerts and paddleboarding on Soda lakes is an easy day activity. I highly suggest Rocky Mountain National Park and Brainard Lake for some animal sightings and views. St, Malo is a beautiful historic landmark near RMNP and Mother Cabrini Shrine is cool too. Head up to Idaho Springs or Leadville for some mountain town vibes.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am surrounded by cheerleaders in my life and I am so thankful for that. My family for sure has been supportive, especially my husband. He fully supported my idea of running my own business and also me fully commandeering our garage. I am so thankful for my brother who has an entrepreneurial mindset and is great at marketing for always supporting my ideas. I call him often to chat about business and our creative ideas. My mom and dad always said ‘you can do anything you set your mind to’ and I am grateful for that gift of confidence building.

I want to shout out to each of the small businesses that I have worked for. I have learned so much about starting a business and things I want to emulate and things I would do differently. Starting a gym in New Mexico in 2016 also really paved the groundwork for knowing I can do this on my own.

I am thankful for my first ever personal training gig at Get Fit in Ky and the trainers I learned from Amber & Adam. I really believe so many things in the universe and people have impacted my journey that it is hard to name them all. One last shout-out is to Dr. Adams Blair in Ky who impacted me in my graduate program and planted the seed for me always coming back to my roots and who I am authentically.
