We had the good fortune of connecting with Ksena McCloy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ksena, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I’ve always loved the idea of owning a small business. After college I owned a small landscape design business and always thought I’d go back to that because it was what I went to school for . But after having my family and playing around with paint in my spare time there was something that drew me to the idea that I could do something I really loved and enjoyed doing and make it successful. I loved breathing new life into things and seeing them transform into my ideas and how much people enjoyed what I created.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Like anything in life it’s all about trial and error. Sometimes there are pieces that I just don’t love how they turned out and so I go back to the drawing board though they seem fewer as I’ve evolved. I also didn’t wake up one day knowing how to refinish furniture or what steps I needed to take to achieve a certain look so there is constant research on my end and a need to evolve as fads change. I think I’ve found where my strengths in style are and have become known for particular styles and finishes that I’ve created. Of course I’m always up for a challenge if someone likes a certain look I’m happy to do my best to recreate it. And that is what keeps it interesting and exciting for me.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Before the pandemic hit I would say I was out a lot more often experiencing what Colorado had to offer. There are so many options for outdoor hiking and scenic routes but one of my favorite spots is Castlewood Canyon. It’s a short drive for me and so much to see. The local scene in both Castle Rock and Parker has be so much to offer but one of my favorite hang outs would be The Union, a small bistro with a great patio on warm days and amazing food. There are so many wonderful shops on the old main street area of Parker with cute restaurants and a fun farmers market on Sundays. I love supporting other small businesses so do my best to stay local.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Annie Sloan is where it all began for me. I was familiar with the brand name but after using her products and learning why she created them (being a busy mom herself and needing a product she could work with in her limited time frames) it was like it was the affirmation I needed to know I could be a successful business and still be there for my kids.
