We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Bodine and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Laura, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Starting a business is not a small feat. I am aware that many businesses do not make it in their infancy. I can attest to the difficulties, the failures, the hesitations, the heartache, the stress and questioning if opening my own practice was the right decision. I am not a risk taker- I like to have a plan, solid ground under my feet and lots of stability! My practice manager (my husband) is the risk taker, he was the force behind me, the encouraging words and to be honest the financial backing. My husband and I started our business on his year one airline salary and a credit card. It was a big risk. My first product order was more than he made in an entire month! He was always encouraging and supportive of this dream and ultimately my happiness. I started focusing on Luxus Aesthetics exclusively in December 2019, only 3 months prior to Covid. In March 2020, we were shut down due to the restrictions and being considered non-essential. There was so much uncertainty with the future of healthcare and aesthetic medicine. I really considered going back to the clinical setting and working for an organization due to all of the unknowns. This was a very low point for me. I decided not to take a position in the healthcare arena, but to hold tight and see what the future held for the aesthetic industry. We made some drastic decisions like selling our house, taking on other temporary jobs and moving out of state in order for me to continue working and holding onto our dream of running this business. As I write this, I am overjoyed and emotional with the success our small business has had even in the uncertainty of Covid. We have continued to grow our business, services and clientele in two states over the last year.

What is the most important factor behind your business’ success?
Being a small business means we have complete control over the quality of the services offered and the end result. The most important factors behind our success have been the relationships we have built with clients, other providers in the aesthetic/service industry, the creativity we can have and the ongoing learning. The dream behind this small business was simply to find happiness and help our patients feel better and be happier as well. Everyday that you are building an empire, loving what you are doing, and never feeling like you are spending a day at work is a win in my opinion! I never thought that this was a reality.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in Colorado lends itself to seeing beauty in many places. Day One: Snag Scooters Coffee visit Garden of the Gods Park and hike Blodgett Peak.
Day Two: Morning recovery followed by a trip Glenwood Springs. Evening visit to soaking pools with dinner at Doc Holidays Saloon.
Day Three: Morning brunch with a drive to Aspen, CO. City walk and pub crawl with classy drinks followed by dinner at one of Aspen’s fine dining restaurants.
Day Four: Hike to a natural Hot Springs near Aspen.
Day Five: Make our way back to Colorado Springs, but not before stopping at Cherry Creek to shop.

Please tell us more about your business. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
This question truly hits home after working through the last 2 years. In business methodology if something doesn’t work you pivot and try again. This could be as simple as tweaking a facebook ad or as complicated as moving your entire operation to a new location. When a road looks closed ahead you find another way. We have run into so many roadblocks, failures and frustrations. Although, I am the face of the business seeing patients in the office, this business is a huge partnership. We are always talking through new ideas, new services, planning and thinking about the future. We have really worked as a team to overcome difficulties that could have prevented Luxus Aesthetics from growing. Each year our net profit grew by a very small amount, and I think that was enough motivation to continue Luxus Aesthetics during its infancy. We never placed an expiration date or set a profit margin as an end goal, instead we placed our patients’ goals and personal happiness in the forefront of our operation. We believed that if we could see small growth each year, then there could be true success in our business.
