Meet Laura Nelson | Small Business Marketing & Local SEO Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Nelson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I was creating my own business plan, I was talking with a lot of other small businesses and realized there was a real need for accessible marketing and SEO (Search Engine Optimization) support. Most new small business owners will build their own website, or get help from a friend or family member who knows how. But they eventually reach a point where their business is growing, and they recognize they need a better website or SEO and have reached their limit on what YouTube or business classes can teach them.
And I think a lot of small business owners feel overwhelmed by marketing and SEO (Search Engine Optimization). It feels too complicated to do on their and too expensive to hire an agency. So I wanted to create a way to make it less overwhelming while focusing on the steps that had the biggest impact for their budget.
So that’s how I came up with Well Crafted Communications, which offers both consulting for business owners who just need a SEO plan that I teach them how o implement themselves and a full-service option for businesses who want the work done for them.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Well Crafted Communications provides local SEO consulting and website redesigns to small businesses, mostly for health and wellness services.
I do things a little differently from a typical SEO agency because I really want SEO to feel accessible instead of overly technical or overwhelming. I want my clients to understand the actions we are taking and to see the results of those actions.
I also want it to feel financially accessible. A lot of small business owners don’t have a large marketing budget. But they need SEO to get more clients. So I offer local SEO consulting where I meet with them a couple times a month, where they learn what actions they need to take and why, and then get a homework assignment to work on between meetings. I’ve seen great results from working with businesses this way.
I also offer full-service website redesigns for small businesses who are ready to invest and elevate their brand. I partner with a website designer, and we work with the client as we build out their brand, SEO, and user experience to create unique websites that reflects who they are and converts.
The final thing that was important to me in creating my business was making sure the clients I work with remain independent. I don’t lock them into maintenance contracts, build them a website at low cost and then make them rent out their website, move them over to website platforms they don’t know how to use, or use the technicalities of SEO or website development to scare them into buying my services. These, unfortunately, are tactics some agencies use and it’s not in the best interest of the client. When I wrap up a project with a client, my goal is for them to feel empowered to be able to maintain their websites and have a list of steps they should continue to take to maintain their SEO.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My friends all have kids, so this would definitely be a kid-friendly itinerary. We’d go to two places we love to take kids — the Denver Museum of Nature and Science and the Denver Zoo.
We’d probably taking them hiking on Mount Sanitas in Boulder and then go to Acreage for a meal after.
We’d also rent paddleboards at Union Reservoir and then take everyone to Lefthand Brewery in Longmont for drinks and a movie on the lawn.
We are so close to Rocky Mountain National Park, we’d definitely drive out there for a day trip or even for an overnight at the YMCA of Estes Park.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
A big boost to the start of my business was attending a Renegade Motherhood networking event in Lafayette, CO. I was drawn to this group because it’s a group of women who are business owners who also understand the tough balance that comes with running a business and also being a mother. It’s a very supportive group, and it’s also where I met many of my first clients.
