We had the good fortune of connecting with Laura Wilkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Laura, how does your business help the community?
Finding your voice as an artist is not an easy task. I always cared about wildlife and the environment it is part of. Through my work I am focusing on demonstrating how art can have a positive impact on the world by using fine art to raise funds and awareness for Libearty Sanctuary, a bear sanctuary in Romania.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a Denver based mixed- media painter and a world traveler continuing to experience life in different cultures and time zones. I found myself most redeemed by incorporating intuitive choice of colors, layered washes and a variety of textures, creating movement and emotion through bold and earthy pigments. My work is inspired by our connection to ocean and land, mirroring the variation on biodiversity. I refuse to be constrained by one medium or technique. As I grow personally, so too my technique develops. My continued growth as an artist embodies an appreciation for balance. At some stages abstraction can be observed in my work, at others interpretations of realism and at times a cohesive mixture.
My work environment has presented the largest challenge throughout the years because my husband and I moved about every two years. Relocating a whole family is a difficult and occasionally stressful task. It can be challenging to maintain consistent studio routines after you start packing your studio space until you unpack it in the new location. I am concentrating on other elements of my profession during this four to eight week phase, such as future project planning, content creation, research, website upkeep, or learning something new.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Because I am new to Denver my friends and I would explore the city and the mountains together. I love art galleries and museums so we would definitely go to Denver Art Museum, Denver Museum of Nature & Science, Denver Botanic Gardens, Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art, Meow Wolf’s Convergence Station, and MCA Denver. We would explore Denver’s vegan food scene at City O’ City and try their “Chicken” & Waffles, a dish made with bourbon-brined, chicken-fried cauliflower topped with bourbon maple syrup, chive crème fraîche, and carrot bacon; Meta Burger and their delicious vegan burgers; Hoja for a delicious vegan breakfast burrito; and we would end the week with a trip to Colorado Wolf and Wildlife Center, a wildlife refuge.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am grateful and humbled by the patronage I have received over the past ten or more years from the collectors who have bought my works of art. They have faith in me and my abilities and that is truly beautiful.
My family and my husband, who have always supported my creative side, enabled me to work as a painter full-time.
