We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Hunter and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lauren, what matters most to you?
I really value authenticity and honesty, even thought the vulnerability that comes with that can be terrifying. I have a very confessional style of writing. It’s scary to be yourself and express yourself authentically in front of strangers. The songs that I write, about my struggles, in the comfort of my home, are scary to perform in front of people I’m seeing for the first time. But I challenge myself to be honest and vulnerable in hopes that others are inspired to do the same, and feel less alone. If I show up as myself, I am judged as myself and that’s scary to me. But constantly masking and pretending to be something I’m not is exhausting. So I choose to embrace the discomfort in vulnerability, in hopes that someone else will resonate with me and feel less alone.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’ve always had a love for music and that love has taken many forms in my life. In 2018 I decided to try teaching music lessons. I taught guitar, piano, and voice. I loved it. In 2019 I decided to let myself try songwriting, and I ended up slowing down on music lessons and allowing myself to explore the process of making music. In March 2020 I performed my first show, which was a massive hurdle for me because of my anxiety. Then, we all know what happened haha. Everything shut down, and we were all suddenly in survival mode. I lost a lot of momentum in that time. I try not to be hard on myself, because I couldn’t focus on anything other than surviving that time, but it’s hard for me. It’s very disappointing, but it helps to know there are many artists that share this frustration with me. I’ve spent the time since 2020 trying to pieces things back together and build up momentum again. In the past year or so my health has been an obstacle that I am trying to take on lovingly. I also face obstacles just for being a woman in music. I’ve learned to push through obstacles to get to the rewarding feelings I get when I play or make music.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love Meta Burger and the cat cafe haha. I also love First Friday’s on Santa Fe and the local art scene. I think the coolest thing about Colorado is all the nature we have around us so I love to get up to the mountains whenever I can! I love hiking in Golden and Boulder too!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’ve been really lucky to have such encouraging people around me. The way my friends have supported my ambitions has helped me keep going when I thought I couldn’t. I wouldn’t have done half the things I’ve done without their support and encouragement.
