We had the good fortune of connecting with Leah Sachs and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Leah, what is the most important factor behind your success / the success of your brand?
All of the love, energy and passion that I put forward into perfecting my fruit jewelry for so many years has built this incredible momentum and energy that I believe people can feel with Slices Of Citrus. Our customers recognize the authenticity and originality within Slices Of Citrus and they can feel the handmade touch that encompasses every piece we create.
I am not only selling fruit jewelry, but I am spreading a message about the beauty in nature, sustainability, and a healthy lifestyle, which people really vibe with. We are all so fascinated by nature’s patterns and I think showcasing fruits and vegetables in a way that can be worn as a piece of jewelry is really exciting for a lot of people and something they have never seen before. So many people have a deep love and appreciation for fruits and vegetables, and wearing them really just showcases that love to the rest of the world! Nature sparks a lot of joy within us, and I believe the success of my brand has a lot to do with that.
Please tell us more about your art. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally? Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way? What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
We got to where we are now with Slices Of Citrus by truly believing in our art and working hard for many years creating different fruit and vegetable jewelry designs. We spent all of our profits on marketing our artwork and invested all of our funds into our company! To make this dream a reality we had to save money, so we lived out of a Honda Element and a van full-time to run our business. We made our jewelry on farms, on the road and we sacrificed a normal lifestyle in a home so that we could save money and travel full-time around the country doing all kinds of events in the hopes that people would support us and buy our fruit jewelry. We really put ourselves out there and traveled countless miles to over 100 different cities, just the two of us, spreading the word about fruit jewelry. It wasn’t easy, and it was a lot of long drives to get our artwork seen but solidifying our connections and networking in person really was what developed us as a brand. To our overwhelming surprise, people loved it far more than we could have ever imagined and the support has grown infinitely ever since! Eric and I work around the clock putting all of our energy into making our jewelry, marketing it and shipping it to our customers along with all of the other tasks that a small business has to manage. We have learned that a positive attitude makes all the difference, and that taking time for ourselves away from work to decompress in nature has been the most important step for us in terms of staying balanced. You have to match your dreams with your work ethic. The bigger your dreams are the harder you have to work. The more you talk about your dreams the more they come to fruition and that is the best advice I could give anyone. Just keep dreaming and working hard for what you want to achieve! We are really so thankful for all of the support everyone has given us and we are so humbled to know how far our fruit jewelry has reached! We have people all over the world wearing our designs now and icons like Tabitha Brown wearing them in the New York Times. It is truly surreal to have so much support for our artwork and because of all of it we have been able to give back more than ever before! This year alone we donated thousands of dollars towards environmental causes and to organizations working towards social justice in America. We have also been able to donate thousands of meals towards American families in need during this COVID-19 pandemic. Our company’s growth has been so rewarding because of how much we have been able to give back and I want people to know that the bigger Slices Of Citrus becomes, the more resources we will allocate in giving back to humanity. I really want to see positive changes in my lifetime and doing what we love while also supporting causes we believe in has been the biggest blessing I could have ever asked for. We hope to keep growing and creating meaningful artwork that inspires us and aim to leave the world a much better place than we found it.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When friends come to visit I always make sure to take them up to the mountains. I love to be in nature so camping, hiking and exploring in nature is definitely where we would head first. We lived up in Summit County for a while and if friends were visiting we would probably spend our time kayaking on the Dillon Lake and enjoying the views as well as eating local vegan food at Piante Pizza in Breckenridge. After camping we would most likely head to a hot spring where we could go soak in the natural springs amongst the stars! 🙂
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am beyond grateful for my partner Eric. He has supported me and encouraged me since day one and almost 8 years later he is still my favorite person to work with, travel with and laugh with. He is the yin to my yang and I am so thankful to be able to work alongside my best friend making the art that we both love so much! The motivation and positive energy that Eric brings to the table every single day for Slices Of Citrus is a driving force behind our company, and together, it feels like we can accomplish whatever we set our minds to. No dream is too large for Eric and that inspires me to keep dreaming bigger and bigger. I am extremely lucky to have found a partner who shares the same values as I do and is willing to work for them day in and day out. I appreciate him so much and am infinitely grateful for what we have been able to accomplish together!
