Meet Leon Joseph Littlebird | Musician, Songwriter, Composer, Performing and Recording Artist, Storyteller

We had the good fortune of connecting with Leon Joseph Littlebird and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Leon Joseph, is your business focused on helping the community? If so, how?
Being a musician for a living has real life ups and downs. However, what keeps me inspired to compose and perform new music is the positive social impact. For example, in May of 2023 I performed my composition for Native Flutes and Symphony Orchestra with the La Jolla Symphony in San Diego. There were several music compositions making up the entire show, but after my performance of “When Echoes Speak” the audience rose to their feet shouting “Bravo” for a long standing ovation. I was over the Moon thrilled, but the comments from audience members after the show revealed how impactful the music really is. In addition to being a musician full time I also am the Vice-president and co-founder of a non-profit in Summit County Colorado called “Summit Musicians Relief Fund”. Now in its seventh year, SMRF helps local musicians in time of financial hardship. To date we have assisted over 70 local performers. During Covid, we produced 21 virtual concerts and provided 44 musicians with much needed income. Musicians helping musicians.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My passion is for song writing and creating original music. The process requires a clear and steady focus to combine a melody with lyrics and to write lyrics that are poetic and meaningful. As a multi-generational Native of Colorado, I call my music: “Native Colorado Music.”
In my folk music performances I will play several instruments including acoustic guitars, percussion and Native flutes. This unique combination delights audiences both young and old.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Living in the Rocky Mountains all my life gives me and endless supply of scenic places to take visitors. If I was to take folks to Denver, I would be sure to visit City Park, the Zoo and the Museums.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My inspirations have been plentiful in my life. My Father was a prolific Artist and he encouraged me to be original in my music. He made sure I had good instruments too. For the past six years I have been performing with Lisa Ann White who continues to inspire and delight me with her talents and dedication.
