We had the good fortune of connecting with Levi (DaVaiVai) Aguilar and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Levi (DaVaiVai), is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is inclusivity. No matter what event I put on for my community it is always based on inclusion and providing a safe space for people to be themselves without fear of judgement or backlash.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
What sets me apart from other artists and performers in my field is that I have dedicated most of my time, efforts, and energy into honing my skills and polishing my craft. I am able to sew and create my own outfits and concepts, I make music and I am known as one of the best performers in my area. I am most proud about being able to reach out to many people and inspire them to be themselves. I am also proud of my previous accomplishments and achievements, being nominated for best make up artist and drag artist in two states! With hard work and true passion is how I got to where I am today in my career and in life. I have dedicated myself to learning the history of the art of drag as well as how to create my own drag persona to add to that history. Teaching myself how to sew, do make up, style wigs, and perform was no easy feat but with perseverance I was able to be successful. Things that I learned along the way is that there is no easy way out, it takes true dedication and effort to be successful in this world. As well as learning that things do not happen overnight and you cannot sit around waiting for things to happen, you have to make things happen. I want the world to know about my brand is that though I am an alternative drag artist, I truly put in the work to include everyone and for everyone to know, that there is something for everyone at my events and in my own personal drag persona. Also To Be Kind, True, And Have Passion!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend visited the area, I would automatically want to show them one of my events that I host, to meet our small but strong queer community! We would go Have A Drink At The Starlight Lounge and Bar, Visit all The wonderful parks and trails we have. I would have them meet the people I look up to and enjoy spending time with, my drag friends/ family and all the other friends I’ve made along the way. Thrifting would be an absolute must because you never know what hidden gem you might find! There are always events going on so there would be plenty to do depending on what you enjoy doing, from live music, to theatre and production!!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The House Of PettyOne is definitely a group of individuals who have definitely helped me pave the way for my career path. Especially my drag sister, Aria PertyOne. Without them I would not have found my specific calling in life and motivated me to constantly evolve my craft into what it is today.
