We had the good fortune of connecting with Lily Tomasula Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lily, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The most rewarding aspect of being a therapist is the opportunity to work with a diverse range of people. I founded Petal & Pine Therapy to focus on clients whose challenges align with my expertise. While I may not be the perfect fit for everyone, I excel in supporting high-achieving women, couples, and individuals navigating significant changes. By centering my practice around these clients, I can offer the most effective support possible. I understand that starting therapy can be daunting, so I’ve simplified the process by offering virtual sessions, allowing clients to engage in the work from a space where they feel comfortable. My goal is to remove barriers to accessing therapy while also creating a sustainable practice for myself.
What should our readers know about your business?
The idea behind Petal & Pine Therapy was that growth looks different to all of us, similar to how plants growing in their ecosystem varies. This has been the grounding value behind my private practice and allows me to to meet people where they’re at, rather than hoping they show up a certain way. Mental health and therapy has gained less stigma after the global pandemic, but there can still be fears around starting therapy. I created my practice to normalize using support in ways that feel good to you, like doing therapy from home. I also wanted to communicate that therapy can be for anyone that feels like they will benefit from it rather than feeling that you have to be in a crisis to need therapy.
On a personal note, Petal & Pine Therapy was created from realizing a great desire to support clients in way that felt more sustainable to me. I was recognizing signs of burnout working in agency jobs and knew if I continued on that route I wouldn’t be able to support clients in the way they deserved. In my current practice, I am able to fully commit to supporting my clients because I have created a business that values well being for everyone.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love being active and being outdoors so I would have to say lots of day trips to hike and get closer to the mountains. I also love centering my days around coffee. I think it would be so fun to pick a coffee shop each day and let that location influence the rest of your itinerary. Really can’t go wrong with a great friend and coffee.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My supervisor Kelly has been one of biggest supporters through the process of starting my private practice. She has been there from the very beginning and continues to see the potential in Petal & Pine Therapy.
Additionally, my fiancé has provided constant reassurance, tech support, and a place to bounce ideas off of.
