We had the good fortune of connecting with Lindsay Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lindsay, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Hands down, being ready and willing to try new things! Let me tell you, in my personal life, I am a creature of habit. I always use the same pump at the same gas station. I order the same thing off the menu at every restaurant I go to. I also only go to the same restaurants over and over again. But in my business, I learned very early on that you have to be ready to try new things! Starting with the simple fact that I NEVER dreamed of becoming a photographer, I never wanted to become a photographer. I was in college studying animal science, majoring in biology and minoring in chemistry. A creative career was the furthest thing from my mind. Until one day my mom needed help getting some photos of my brother during a football game, the rest is history. I bet you are wondering how taking some entry level DSLR photos at your brother’s football game turned into a full-blown wedding photography career? Well, I tried new things. After one season of high school football, I started to get the feeling that I was actually good at photography-like a hidden talent sort of thing? So, I experimented with everything from sports photography to newborn photography (I was really bad at that one LOL) to taking photos of our cattle. While I was trying new forms of photography before finally finding my niche in western lifestyle weddings and couples, I also noticed how the world was evolving from a face-to-face business where we hand out paper business cards, to the almighty world of social media marketing. You want to talk about having to try new things, have you ever heard of the Instagram algorithm. It changes almost monthly, if not weekly! Being willing to try new methods than what was “typical” for starting a business in 2015 really helped me succeed in the western wedding industry.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Photographers are, as they say, a dime a dozen. The industry is extremely over saturated so being able to turn photography into a full-time career, let alone standing out from the crowd, can seem very difficult! For me, as I tried all sorts of photography, I found my passion and my heart in photographing things I already enjoyed in my day-to-day life. I have always loved animals, agriculture and I am a hopeless romantic who watches sappy, as Tucker calls them, “high schooler movies”, all the time. I combined my deep roots in the agriculture lifestyle with photographing people in love and BOOM, there you have yourself a western wedding photographer. Part of being a western wedding photographer is having knowledge of working with 1600+ pound animals. It can be dangerous at times, but I truly know how to listen and communicate with animals and know what is important to my ideal client. Don’t try and be something you are not. My ideal clients want photos with their cattle in the background, I want photos with my cattle in the background. Sometimes it’s as easy as “keep it simple stupid”. When you visit my little slice of the internet you will be greeted by a photographer based in Colorado but doesn’t have to have the mountains in the background, my pet cow Chocolate, and love stories that show off the people who work in agriculture and the western industry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If a friend was visiting me, we would of course come check out the cattle, my cattle love to get attention and “cow cake” as treats! I think the Mexican restaurants in Northern Colorado are amazing, because who doesn’t love some green chili!? Last but not least, a trail ride on horseback up in Estes Park would be so much fun to top off the trip.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My fiancé, Tucker Allmer, and I have known each other since we were 9 and 12 years old. We grew up showing livestock against each other, but we didn’t actually connect on a personal level until later in life. Two weeks after we started “dating” I decided to drop the bombshell on him that I would be taking a year off from college. My only job at the time was coaching volleyball and I don’t really think you can count taking photos of your brother playing football as a “job” because it wasn’t really making any money, but that’s what I was doing. In this day and age you’d think that would be a big red flag. For nearly two years he supported us and instead of discouraging me from pursuing photography he bought me a nicer DSLR so I didn’t have to use my mom’s, he even bought me a new laptop so I could edit photos more efficiently. Did he have the extra funds to buy me those things? Maybe not, but he believed in me and that was far greater than anything he could have ever bought for me. Since 2015 he has tagged along with me to nearly EVERY photo shoot and wedding I have ever shot. Now when you book me for your wedding, Tucker is actually my second shooter! I could have always gotten a small business start up loan and bought the camera and laptop just fine on my own but I could have never gotten where I am today without his mental and emotional support.
